About The Position

Lifeguards ensure the safety and well-being of all patrons at the aquatic facility, which operates year-round for recreational swimming, lap swimming, and special programs. Lifeguards actively prevent and respond to emergencies, enforce facility rules, and maintain a clean and safe environment. When not performing lifeguarding duties, employees assist with additional tasks that support daily facility operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Equivalent experience may be substituted.
  • Current and valid Alabama driver’s license.
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, including CPR (Adult, Infant, and Child) and First Aid.
  • Reliable phone number and/or email address for contact.
  • Willingness to work overtime, evenings, weekends, holidays, and non-standard hours as required.

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of lifeguard experience.
  • One to two years of college.
  • Water Safety Instructor certification or ability to obtain certification within one (1) year.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains constant surveillance of patrons and responds quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
  • Enforces all aquatic facility policies, rules, and safety regulations.
  • Conducts daily inspections of the pool, equipment, and facility; report hazards, safety concerns, or maintenance needs.
  • Ensures all safety and rescue equipment is properly positioned and fully operational.
  • Makes safety-related decisions regarding health concerns, intoxication, and improper attire in accordance with facility policy.
  • Reports accidents, incidents, complaints, and facility issues to the Aquatics Coordinator or Aquatics Director.
  • Completes accurate records, reports, and incident documentation.
  • Monitors water quality, chemical levels, and filtration systems to ensure compliance with health standards.
  • Attends mandatory staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
  • Maintains a professional, courteous, and positive relationship with patrons and coworkers.
  • Secures facility gates and doors during opening and closing procedures.
  • Assists with swim lessons in accordance with American Red Cross standards.
  • Operates computerized membership and facility management systems.
  • Meets daily swimming requirements (minimum of 1,000 yards per day).
  • Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner.
  • Maintains a highly professional attitude and demeanor at all times.
  • Provides responsible, appropriate, and satisfactory leadership within the City.
  • Communicates positively and professionally in all aspects of the position.
  • Attends all department meetings, City meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Becomes thoroughly familiar with all pertinent state and national policies and comply with said policies.
  • Complies with City wide and departmental policies, as well as state and federal laws.
  • Ensures the positive promotion of the City.
  • Is prompt and punctual in reporting for work, meetings, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
