About The Position

The principal function of an employee in this class is to serve as a lead lifeguard, performing lifeguarding duties, maintaining facilities, and instructing aquatics programs, ensuring patron safety at aquatic facilities. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but significant leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, members of community groups, local schools, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed at aquatic facilities, both indoors and outdoors.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
At least one year of experience in lifeguarding or aquatics, including teaching aquatics programs lessons
Must possess and maintain the following: Red Cross Lifeguarding with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid certification (expired certification acceptable at hire).
Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.
Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification within six months of employment in the position.
Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Thorough knowledge of swimming and lifeguarding techniques.
Thorough knowledge of First Aid, CPR, and use of AED.
Thorough knowledge of stabilization of victims with spinal cord injuries and other life-threatening injuries.
Thorough knowledge of proper aquatic teaching techniques in all ages and levels of ability.
Thorough knowledge of pool water chemistry.
Thorough knowledge of water quality regulations, policies and standards.
Thorough knowledge of community and recreation programs.
Ability to properly perform rescues.
Ability to instruct individuals on water safety.
Ability to accurately operate point-of-sale and pass registration computer program.
Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with the general public.
Ability to lead the work of others.
Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly and with tact.
Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.

Possess a valid Driver’s License and must obtain a Montana Driver’s License within 60 days of employment.
Must successfully complete two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations including a swim-tread-swim sequence and a timed surface dive rescue event.

Responsibilities

Performs life-saving and guarding duties, including assisting patrons in life threatening situations, enforcing pool rules and regulations for the efficient and safe operation of the aquatic facilities, providing active accident prevention, monitoring patrons in the water, and completing rescue accident and incident reports.
Provides aquatics programs instruction to patrons, including composing lesson plans, demonstrating proper stroke techniques and awareness, ensuring safety of children and adults by watching for potential hazards and dangerous situations, and teaching water safety and pool rules.
Serves as a Lead for assigned lifeguards staff, including training, assigning tasks, providing guidance, and ensuring work is completed satisfactorily.
Assists in pool programming.
Performs maintenance, repair, and custodial services for pool, equipment, and facilities.
Documents and records of activities.
Tests and monitors chemical balance in water and changes to water chemistry.
Provides customer service, including answering questions, referring customers to other agencies or organizations when necessary, accepting payment for passes, parties, lessons, and programs, answering phones and directing calls, and registering patrons for programs.
Assists in leading in-service trainings.
Maintains a clean and safe swimming facility, including cleaning locker rooms, lobby area, pool deck, and restrooms, and ensuring pool, equipment room, and pool deck are clear of potentially dangerous objects or situations.
Opens and closes facilities.
Completes locker rentals.
Organizes and maintains lost and found.
Performs cashier functions, including taking payments and reconciling funds received with transaction register.
Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.
Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.
