About The Position

Reporting directly to the Aquatic Coordinator, the Lifeguard II’s priority is to ensure patrons have a safe, enjoyable experience through the provision of lifeguarding. Using excellent interpersonal skills, Lifeguards II’s deliver responsive customer service, address concerns and inquiries promptly – including knowledge of all programs, schedules, and general information about the Manluk Regional Aquatic and Fitness Centre. Lifeguarding patrons, prevent injuries through public education, provide first aid, complete maintenance tasks, administration tasks, provide leadership and guidance to Lifeguard I’s/Instructors, and other duties as required. Lifeguard II’s take the lead role on ensuring emergency situations are handled according to procedures when required.

Requirements

  • Minimum 18 years old.
  • Minimum 2 years lifeguarding experience.
  • Possession of the following current certifications – ability to renew qualifications annually or as required:
  • Lifesaving Society’s National Lifeguard (NL).
  • Alberta Workplace approved Intermediate First Aid (IFA).
  • Lifesaving Society’s Swim Instructor (SI).
  • Lifesaving Society’s Lifesaving Instructor (LSI).
  • Proof of certification and Lifesaving Society Member ID # submitted prior to being considered for position.
  • Minimum 2 years of lifeguarding experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of pool related experience and knowledge of pool operations.
  • Excellent customer services skills.
  • Ability to teach, provide constructive feedback, and support the building of swimming skills of program participants.
  • Ability to work within and as a leader of a lifeguard team.
  • Ability to perform and lead first aid procedures.
  • Demonstrates commitment in continuous learning and improvement of skills.
  • Can implement, respond to, and take charge of emergency situations and can perform under stress.
  • Takes strong initiative, demonstrates creativity.
  • Is responsible/accountable and demonstrates integrity.
  • The employee is responsible for full cooperation with all aspects of the City’s Occupational Health and Safety program, including compliance with all rules and regulations, and for continually practicing safety while performing their duties, and monitor and enforce subordinate compliance with the OH&S program.

Nice To Haves

  • AARFP’s Pool operator 1 is considered an asset.
  • 1 Additional Instructor certification such as Lifesaving Sport Coach 1, First Aid Instructor, NL Instructor, Lifesaving Society Trainer, ETC, is considered an asset.
  • Experience supervising staff considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide the highest standard of lifeguarding, including effective scanning, patrolling and professionalism in a team setting.
  • Provide the highest standard of instruction, including instruction of swimming techniques, strokes, water safety and lifesaving skills.
  • Act as Shift Supervisor when no Lifeguard III is on shift.
  • Assist Instructors with their lessons when required.
  • Respond appropriately when first aid treatment and/or emergency response is required.
  • Conduct opening, closing and provincial water tests when needed.
  • Responds to and supervises emergency situations, preforms first aid as required and ensures that required documentation is completed.
  • Prevent incidents: safeguard the public through enforcement of policies, public education, exceptional safety surveillance and routine safety inspections.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by promoting positive patron relations, answering questions, educating public and responding to concerns.
  • Complete assigned maintenance such as cleaning the pool deck and change rooms, etc.
  • Perform basic operational tasks to ensure regular operation of the facility.
  • Complete necessary mechanical and operational checklists, charts, forms, and accident and near-miss reports.
  • Set up and take down equipment according to the facility schedule.
  • Maintain professionalism by keeping a clean, presentable appearance, being prompt and prepared for every shift, and behaving in an appropriate manner both on and off deck.
  • Other duties as required.
