The City of Roanoke is seeking a dedicated Juvenile Life Skills Coach to perform human services work with juveniles involved with the Court Service Unit. The successful candidate will develop, implement and monitor comprehensive plans with youth to work toward goal setting/attainment, social and emotional skills, job readiness, financial literacy and job readiness. Attendance at juvenile probation meetings, routine court testimony, data collection, data analysis and reporting are key position functions. Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with a major in social work, psychology, criminal justice or related field; two years related experience and/or training in counseling, case management or equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid state driver's license. Work Monday thru Friday, some evenings. Must clear criminal background investigation. Examples of Duties SUMMARY The Life Skills Coach has responsibilities for empowering juveniles with skill building techniques to youth in the program. The position requires interventions and support services for identified at-risk youth, in accordance with applicable 23 Court Service Unit and Virginia Community Crime Control policies and regulations. Performs human services work in the assessment, coaching and monitoring of youth involved with the 23 Juvenile Court Service Unit. Develops and implements individualized plans to foster life skills and social competence. Routine court testimony, data collection, data analysis and reporting are key position functions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned Administer standardized assessments for referred youth. Coordinates and monitors program activities pertaining to the implementation of 23 Court Service Unit policies and procedures and the Code of Virginia. Develop and monitor individualized plans that incorporate youth, family and community areas of need and strengths. This includes consideration of physical and clinical needs with an emphasis on emotional, social and intellectual functioning. Coordinate transportation for youth to attend school, activities and individual or family sessions/meetings as necessary. Conducts home visits to assess risk factors and implement interventions. Assists with the identification of youth displaying risk factors and consults with local juvenile probation personnel to reduce youth risk factors on a consistent basis. Conducts family, individual and group planning sessions. This includes participation in Interdisciplinary Team meetings and Family Assessment and Planning Team meetings as appropriate. Works collaboratively with other community agencies for service coordination and program development. This includes referrals to community resources to assist students and their families. Prepares progress evaluations and recommendation reports; routinely provides testimony in court. Collects and analyzes data on barriers to goal progress, baseline data and trends over time. This includes data collection for Virginia Juvenile Community Crime Control Act (VJCCCA) reporting. Maintains appropriate documentation as established by the Department of Juvenile Justice for VJCCCA funds. Initiates incentive programs and support strategies to improve youth engagement and to reward youth progress. Performs other duties as assigned. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Possession of an appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
