About The Position

The Life Safety team at Saint John’s University invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), benefit eligible position of Life Safety Officer. The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University offer a competitive and comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees. Under the direct supervision of the Director, the Life Safety Officer is responsible for patrolling the campus, ensuring the safety and security of the Saint John’s community. This role includes monitoring security concerns, enforcing traffic regulations, and addressing health and safety matters to protect all students, staff, and visitors. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess a valid Minnesota Class D driver's license
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive criminal background check consistent with Minnesota law and institutional policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a wide range of situations with calmness and authority, maintaining composure and control in both high-stress and routine scenarios.
  • Willingness and ability to work rotating shifts, including weekends and overtime, as dictated by department schedules.
  • Basic computer proficiency; familiarity with security-related software preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol campus facilities and grounds on foot, bicycle, or by motor vehicle to ensure the security and safety of campus buildings, grounds, and the campus community.
  • Ensure adherence to vehicular traffic and parking rules, maintaining orderly and safe campus operations.
  • Identify and report hazardous conditions, fire risks, and any other potential threats to safety.
  • Respond promptly to and address campus emergencies and incidents.
  • Provide assistance and support to the Saint John’s community and guests in accordance with departmental policies and regulations.
  • Investigate traffic accidents and report findings to relevant authorities, following department guidelines.
  • Provide traffic direction and crowd control for campus events, ensuring smooth and safe operations.
  • Participate in required departmental meetings, as well as training sessions, to maintain knowledge and skills relevant to the role.
  • Complete and submit required reports and records with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Oversee and guide student officers, ensuring adherence to department standards.
  • Maintain uniforms and equipment in compliance with departmental regulations.
  • Perform dispatch responsibilities when required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
