About The Position

The Activities Director is responsible for creating and leading a vibrant, engaging, and person-centered life enrichment program that promotes residents' physical, emotional, social, cognitive, and spiritual well-being. This role oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of meaningful activities and events that enhance quality of life while fostering a welcoming community environment for residents, families, team members, and visitors. The Activities Director serves as a key member of the leadership team and collaborates closely with residents, families, volunteers, and staff to develop programs that reflect resident interests, abilities, and preferences.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), Recreation Management, Gerontology, Human Services, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in activities, life enrichment, recreation, or resident engagement, preferably in senior living, assisted living, memory care, healthcare, or long-term care.
  • Demonstrated leadership, organization, and project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, and relationship-building abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with older adults, family members, volunteers, and team members from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn community management software.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS), Activity Director Certification, or comparable professional credential.
  • Previous supervisory or volunteer management experience.
  • Experience working with residents living with dementia or memory care needs.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, implement, coordinate, and evaluate a comprehensive life enrichment and activities program that meets the diverse interests, abilities, and needs of residents.
  • Create and maintain monthly activity calendars that offer a variety of social, educational, recreational, cultural, wellness, and community engagement opportunities.
  • Assess resident interests and preferences through ongoing communication and feedback.
  • Ensure activities support resident care plans and enhance overall quality of life.
  • Lead and participate in activities, special events, celebrations, outings, and community programs, including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Visit residents regularly to encourage participation and provide individualized engagement opportunities when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to support resident well-being and ensure a team-based approach to resident care and engagement.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with residents, families, staff, community organizations, and local partners.
  • Provide guidance, training, and oversight to volunteers and activity team members.
  • Recruit, onboard, and coordinate volunteers and community groups to enhance resident programming.
  • Participate in leadership meetings and contribute to community-wide initiatives and goals.
  • Support occupancy and marketing efforts through resident and family engagement, community outreach, and participation in tours and special events.
  • Represent the community at networking, outreach, and partnership-building opportunities within the Middleton and surrounding area communities.
  • Promote programs and activities that highlight the community's culture and resident experience.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the activities department budget, including supplies, entertainment, transportation, food, and program expenses.
  • Ensure programs are delivered within established budget and quality standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, reports, attendance records, and activity assessments as required.
  • Monitor applicable state and federal regulations and recommend updates to policies, procedures, and programming as appropriate.
  • Prepare and present activity program reports and outcomes to the Executive Director and leadership team.
  • Stay current on industry trends, best practices, and regulatory requirements related to senior living and resident engagement.
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and continuously identify opportunities for innovation and improvement.
