About The Position

The Excel Center, an adult high school program operated by Goodwill Industries of the Chesapeake, is seeking a passionate and student-focused Life Coach to support adult learners on their path to earning a high school diploma. This role serves as a student advocate and success coach, managing a caseload of 65–80 students and helping them overcome barriers to education. Life Coaches build strong relationships, connect students to critical resources, and support academic progress in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, human services, education, or a related field required
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in social work, counseling, advising, academic support, or a related field
  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills
  • Ability to manage a high-volume caseload and prioritize effectively
  • Knowledge of community resources and support services
  • Strong problem-solving and crisis response abilities
  • Data tracking and analysis skills
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Teams, and student information systems
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with a team
  • Professionalism, empathy, and cultural competence
  • Must successfully pass a background check

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with high school students in a non-traditional or adult education setting strongly preferred
  • Bilingual English/Spanish highly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Build strong, supportive relationships with students to promote retention and success
  • Provide individualized support, including tutoring and substitute teaching as needed
  • Collaborate with teachers, leadership, and staff to ensure student achievement
  • Participate in team meetings and professional development
  • Manage a caseload of approximately 65–80 students
  • Monitor student data, attendance, and academic progress
  • Develop student schedules and guide students toward graduation and postsecondary goals
  • Prioritize and triage student needs while responding to urgent situations
  • Connect students with community resources (housing, childcare, employment, etc.)
  • Build and maintain partnerships with community agencies, schools, and employers
  • Support students in overcoming personal and academic barriers
  • Model professionalism and reinforce school expectations
  • Conduct effective, respectful conversations with students in challenging situations
  • Maintain a visible presence within the school to support engagement and safety
  • Serve as a substitute instructor when needed
  • Support additional student engagement activities and initiatives
