The Lieutenant is responsible for organizing and conducting inspections and searches of inmates, detainees, and offenders, and their living and work areas. This role involves preparing records and reports, maintaining logs, and verifying inmate counts. The Lieutenant fosters a team effort among correctional officers by providing support, motivation, training, and assistance. They are responsible for reporting and investigating unusual occurrences, directing the work of employees to ensure effectiveness, and supervising the daily routine of the security section. The Lieutenant enforces post orders, ensures officers are familiar with shift assignments, handles disciplinary reports, and prepares reports of disturbances and shift activities. They function as a shift supervisor as needed, supervising, instructing, training, and ensuring the safety of assigned employees, inmates, detainees, and offenders. This includes scheduling employee and inmate work and off-duty time, and assisting in formulating security and work procedures. The role involves supervising and providing custody and security of inmates, detainees, and offenders, including observing their actions, performing searches, restraining and securing sometimes assaultive individuals, and transferring and transporting them. The Lieutenant also supervises and provides security for inmates performing technical skills in various operations, which may involve physical demands such as climbing, working outdoors, and operating equipment. They must respond to emergencies, including using force and deadly force when necessary, and read, review, and apply information from inmate records. The position requires compliance with all policies and procedures, enforcement of disciplinary rules, and supervision of record maintenance. A variety of marginal duties may also be assigned.
