About The Position

The Lieutenant is responsible for performing advanced law enforcement duties to preserve public peace and safety. This role oversees the prevention, detection, and investigation of criminal activity; the apprehension of offenders; and the provision of assistance during emergencies while ensuring the protection of civil rights. The Lieutenant ensures adherence to tribal, federal, state, county, and municipal laws, as well as departmental policies, procedures, and regulations. This position reports directly to the Deputy Director and is responsible for carrying out directives and operational priorities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six (6) years of experience in a related field.
  • Must live within Tribal Jurisdictional Service Area.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting.
  • Must maintain Special Law Enforcement Certification (SLEC) throughout employment.
  • Must meet and maintain eligibility for Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) deputation.
  • Must possess and maintain Advanced CLEET, First Aid, CPR and Special Law Enforcement Certification (SLEC) throughout employment.
  • Must pass the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI).
  • The employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG's Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA's List of Excluded Providers, or listed on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIIE).
  • Must maintain no restrictions from testifying in any federal, tribal, and state court while employed with Cherokee Nation Marshal Service (CNMS).
  • Must pass firearms qualifications semi-annually.

  • Must complete mid-level supervision school within one (1) year of employment.
