This is the fifth level in the fire series. Incumbents supervise a crew of two to four firefighters during daily activities and on emergency scenes. Responsibilities may include ensuring the maintenance of equipment and facilities; training firefighters; making tactical decisions during emergency and non-emergency incidents; scheduling firefighters; maintaining records; and preparing related reports. The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned. Supervises staff to include prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations. Ensures the proper condition, maintenance, and appearance of apparatus, facilities, and equipment; performs basic preventative maintenance on assigned equipment; schedules routine and non-routine maintenance. Makes tactical decisions in emergency and non-emergency incidents, which may include assigning work to staff and providing input for strategic decisions. Prepares and maintains a variety of operational records and reports. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Performs other related work as required. This position has no fiscal responsibilities. Represent the department to other County departments, elected officials and outside agencies; coordinate Finance Department activities with those of other departments and outside agencies and organizations. Provide staff assistance to the department Director. Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints. Supervises the firefighters assigned to his truck and/or station.
