About The Position

The Licensed Vocational Nurse will provide direct nursing and therapeutic support to the inmate population at FCI/FPC Herlong. The position administers medications, supports pill line and chronic-care clinics, performs authorized diagnostic and laboratory procedures, responds to urgent needs, and maintains accurate and confidential clinical records.

Requirements

  • Must have graduated from an accredited Vocational Nursing school or program.
  • Must maintain a current Vocational Nurse license in the State of California or Nevada.
  • Must perform only duties and assignments consistent with education, training, experience, and applicable nursing licensure laws.
  • Must be able to work with an inmate population representing varied cultural, regional, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Must be free of communicable disease and provide tuberculosis or other health documentation when required by the institution.
  • Must satisfy all BOP/DOJ background, institutional-security, suitability, residency, and access requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one year of experience in a correctional environment is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care and therapeutic treatment as ordered by Health Services clinical staff and within the scope of current licensure.
  • Administer prescribed oral, intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular medications and assist with medication distribution at pill line.
  • Monitor and evaluate patient response to therapy and communicate concerns to appropriate clinical personnel.
  • Perform skin testing, venipuncture, visual-acuity testing, EKGs, and other authorized diagnostic procedures.
  • Process and file laboratory work, maintain accurate logs, screen results for normal or abnormal values, and notify providers as directed.
  • Secure, account for, store, and dispose of sharps according to institutional and national requirements.
  • Assist physicians and advanced practice providers with chronic-care clinics and common chronic conditions.
  • Initiate emergency care and provide basic first aid and preventive-care guidance consistent with community standards and scope of practice.
  • Document patient care, health histories, diagnostic testing, and other clinical activities accurately and confidentially.
  • Review clinical records for completeness and appropriate placement of information.
  • Operate EKG and laboratory equipment and follow all infection-control procedures.
  • Recognize gross mood changes and support appropriate mental-health screening and referral.
  • Maintain professional boundaries, follow institutional security procedures, and report safety or rule violations appropriately.
  • Wear navy-blue scrubs or professional attire appropriate to the correctional environment; scrubs are preferred.
