About The Position

The County of Riverside - Riverside University Health System (RUHS) - Correctional Health Systems is seeking multiple Per Diem Licensed Vocational Nurse IIIs to join their CHS-Banning Correctional Facility and CHS-SW Justice Center teams located throughout Riverside County locations including Riverside, Murrieta, Banning, and Indio. Under supervision and direction of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or physician, performs nursing duties within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act for vocational nursing in the care of patients or inmates at the County Sheriff/Probation adult and juvenile correctional facilities; and performs other related duties as required. The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in this class are assigned to RUHS Correctional Healthcare Services at an adult detention facility and perform routine and emergency care nursing duties under general supervision and medical protocols. The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) is not an independent practitioner. Incumbents working at the County Sheriff/Probation adult and juvenile correctional facilities have one or more years of experience working as an LVN in an acute care, ambulatory, or correctional healthcare setting. The Licensed Vocational Nurse III class is the advanced level for LVNs working in County Sheriff/Probation adult and juvenile correctional facilities. Incumbents assigned to this class perform the full range of professional nursing duties within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act for vocational nursing and may have responsibility for emergency care nursing and/or directing and supervising staff and the operations of an outpatient mental health clinic or FQHC or adult and juvenile correctional facility. Responsibilities are further expanded to include assignments in training needs assessment, in-service training, problem-solving clinical and administrative issues, and participating in standardized related policies and procedures. May serve in the absence of the registered nurse or manager in charge, as needed, and may supervise, precept, and mentor staff who have been assigned to the mental health clinic, FQHC, or adult and juvenile correctional facility. Bilingual candidates are preferred. These positions will require traveling to facilities throughout Riverside County located in Riverside, Murrieta, Banning, and Indio.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid California Vocational Nurse's License issued by the California Board of Vocational Nurse and Psychiatric Technician Examiners.
  • Possession of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association for professional healthcare providers and IV Therapy/Blood Withdrawal certified by the Board of CA Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians.
  • A valid California Driver's License is required as driving will be required to adjacent county jail facilities based on staffing needs throughout Riverside County.
  • Must maintain a Sheriff's Security Clearance, Level-1 Security Clearance background investigation, for access to all the correctional facilities.
  • Lifting to 50 pounds; standing for long periods

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care to patients within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act; prepare patients for physicians, registered nurses, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners, and care for patients during treatment; administer medications using subcutaneous, intramuscularly, intradermal, subdermal, and/or oral methods.
  • Take temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure of patients as necessary; apply and change dressings and care for wounds; may collect specimens for laboratory analysis; assist physicians, registered nurses, and mid-level providers in performing examinations, respiratory care, and other treatments including minor surgical procedures, PAP smears, and colposcopies.
  • Perform venipuncture and injection of medications including biological immunizations for pediatrics and adults, in addition to the provision of Tuberculin skin tests, Coccidioidin skin tests, and Histoplasmin skin tests in the course of a tuberculosis control program.
  • Perform documentation as required within the scope of the Vocational Nursing Practice Act and established rules of charting; chart treatments and medications and maintain pertinent medical records; collect data from patients to ensure scheduling with appropriate services; maintain clinical records, reports and charge tickets; review charts to determine type of treatment the patient may require and assure proper clinic scheduling and continuity of care.
  • Counsel, advise, and educate patients regarding proper healthcare methods; set clinic appointments per established policies and procedures; refer patients for specialty care to outside agencies utilizing knowledge of payor source to ensure appropriate referrals to outside agencies and programs.
  • Assist physicians, registered nurses, and mid-level providers in the administration of special treatments, examinations, and intravenous therapy; chart treatments and medications and maintain pertinent medical records according to established practice by the Vocational Nursing Practice Act policies and procedures.
  • Assist physicians, registered nurses, and mid-level providers in the administration of medical records; assist in the data collection, preparation, and implementation of patient care plans; participate in patient education and rehabilitation programs and document data appropriately.
  • Observe patient's condition and behavior, reporting significant changes to the supervisor.
  • May act under supervision and direction of a physician, registered nurse, or mid-level provider as a nursing leader over Health Services Assistants, Certified Medical Assistants, Office Assistants, and other LVNs, as assigned.
  • Participate in, or provide leadership, to various committee meetings and present and/or gather data and information to assist management in making administrative and operational decisions; participate or provide leadership in committee activities related to performance improvement issues by auditing patient records.
  • Serve as a preceptor and on-going mentor to nursing staff; act as a resource to other staff and administration, actively supporting the Nurse Manager and supervisory staff.
