About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director of Special Education and under the professional direction of a California credentialed district nurse, this role coordinates the activities of a school health services office, provides LVN-level nursing services for students, and performs other duties relating to the local school health services program with the goal of assuring access and continuity of health care for students.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of special program goals and objectives, general concepts of child development and characteristics of children in special programs.
  • Skills and abilities in vocational nursing, first aid, CPR, AED, administration of medications, performing specialized health care procedures and techniques, detecting signs and symptoms of child abuse, infection control procedures, hazardous waste management, and record keeping and reporting.
  • Universal health precautions.
  • Proper handling techniques of hazardous materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively one-on-one and in small groups.
  • Ability to exercise judgment in dealing with emergencies and special health needs.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively.
  • Ability to use discretion in handling confidential records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff and other health care professionals and the general public; effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to operate a computer.
  • Ability to type a rate of 40 words per minute.
  • Possession of valid State of California License of Vocational Nursing, First Aid, CPR and AED Certificates.
  • Willingness to use own vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • One to two years of nursing related experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Works cooperatively with district nurse, site health clerks and administration.
  • Implements specialized health care procedures, including but not limited to, sugar testing, catheterization, blood pressure, oral suction, and gastrostomy tube feedings, chest percussion, postural drainage, ileostomy, colostomy care and seizure procedures, turning medically fragile students and operating and maintaining various mechanical apparatus used in caring for students as necessary.
  • Assures that all procedures are provided under specified written provisions approved by physician and requested by parent.
  • Conducts preliminary evaluations of ill or injured students within the framework of the San Diego County Health Department requirements, school law, and district policies, including interviewing and physically assessing students.
  • Administers prescribed medications according to instructions and district policies.
  • Responds to medical emergencies on the school site.
  • Administers first aid to ill or injured students.
  • Contacts and coordinates with emergency medical services, child protective services, with prior authorization of vice principal or principal, if time permits.
  • Participates in IEP meetings as appropriate.
  • Communicates with hospitals, physicians, and parents regarding medication, prescriptions, dietary restrictions, health and immunization records and medical status of students.
  • Assists with vision, hearing and physical screening as directed by district nurse.
  • Provides staff with current information regarding specific health problems of their students.
  • Coordinates and consults with district nurse regarding management of health office, first aid and emergency care.
  • Carries out programs directed toward control of communicable diseases in the school and community.
  • Coordinates and participates in routine in-service training as required.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with a variety of groups, including students, parents, teachers, district nurses, speech therapists, administrators, co-workers, supervisors, consultants and the general public.
  • Distributes notices to teachers and parents regarding health issues, special health needs and immunizations.
  • Consults with staff regarding health information as needed.
  • Demonstrates and models safe, prudent, and healthful work behaviors and practices; identifies and works toward the elimination of unsafe or unhealthful work area conditions.
  • Works with and around hazardous materials.
  • Performs other essential job-related work as assigned.
