The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. An employee in the Nurse Stipend Position is expected to attend an accredited licensed vocational nursing (LVN) program as scheduled, meet all requirements to graduate as a Graduate Vocational Nurse (GVN), and complete the LVN board of the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) examiners. Upon completion, the employee in the Nurse Stipend Position must fulfill the Academic Stipend Agreement by working 2 months as an LVN employee for each month in the LVN trainee program.

Requirements

  • Ability to attend LVN program as scheduled.
  • Ability to pass LVN program and graduate program at end of required courses.
  • Ability to pass LVN board of the Texas BON examiners within 75 days of getting the authorization to test (ATT).

  • Experience with working with people with intellectual, developmental, or physical disabilities preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. May serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required to meet operational needs of the facility.
  • Passing grade as defined by the trainee’s vocational nursing program classes and clinicals.
  • Provide semester schedule and monthly attendance reports to the State Supported Living Center Chief Nurse Executive (CNE) or designee.
  • Attend scheduled check-ins with the CNE or designee at least once per semester.
  • Attend any unscheduled meetings determined necessary by the CNE or designee to discuss any issues which arise during the course of the training period.
  • Comply with any directives received from the CNE or designee during the course of study.
  • Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. (5%)
