Licensed Practical Nurse (PRN): Lunenburg Correctional Center
About The Position
This is a PRN (as needed) Licensed Practical Nurse position at Lunenburg Correctional Center, focusing on providing evidence-based nursing care within a Substance Use Recovery Team. The role involves screening patients, administering medications, providing first aid and basic life support, and maintaining communication with security and treatment staff. The nurse will record pertinent information in medical records and interact with other departments as needed. This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, with an average of no more than 29 hours per week. This wage position offers no state benefits.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in Virginia and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
- Working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of practical or general nursing care
- Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals
- Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care
- Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire
Nice To Haves
- Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment
- Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care
Responsibilities
- Provide evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices, and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
- Screen for sick call, administer medications, and provide first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
- Maintain open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan.
- Record all pertinent information into the medical record.
- Interact with other departments as needed.
- Promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
- Work hours, days, and locations as assigned and be capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
- Perform assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
