About The Position

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a trained healthcare worker who, under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), provides nursing care to residents. The LPN assists the RN in caring for acutely and chronically ill residents. The work performed is assisting and technical in nature and is regulated by the organization's policies and procedures. The judgment required is based upon a minimum of scientific knowledge and is limited to activities that are largely repetitive and routine.

Requirements

  • Graduated from a state-approved school of Practical Nursing.
  • Passed the State Board Examination for Practical Nursing.
  • Licensed to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Georgia.
  • Active American Heart Association BLS certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic Computer Skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and organizes resident care under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)/Director of Nursing (DON).
  • Fills out work assignments from the resident activities record at the beginning of the work tour.
  • Provides for elimination needs, including bedpans, enemas, catheterization, and insertion of Foley catheters.
  • Collects specimens such as urine, stool, and sputum, and cultures.
  • Prepares residents for meals, assists with serving and feeding, and administers gastric feedings. Does not insert gastric tubes unless the LPN has received special training.
  • Measures and records intake and output.
  • Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure, reporting any deviations from normal to the RN.
  • Monitors intravenous infusions, removes needles as directed by the RN, and applies Band-Aids. An LPN can only start IVs if they have had special training and approval.
  • Observes and accurately records the results of treatments and nursing care on nursing records.
  • Reports observable changes in residents' condition and other pertinent information to the RN.
  • Works with the RN in the care of residents requiring professional nursing skills.
  • Carries out the part of the nursing care plan delegated by the RN.
  • Administers irrigations.
  • Cares for residents receiving oxygen by mask, catheter, or cannula.
  • Performs nose and throat suction with bulb syringes or suction machines.
  • Performs simple dressings and assists with complicated dressings.
  • Administers first aid.
  • Positions residents under direct orders from the RN.
  • Administers medications as assigned by the RN.
  • Contacts the attending physician regarding changes in a resident's condition.
  • Completes informative and accurate summaries monthly for skilled residents (daily) and ICF residents (every two weeks).
  • Charts results on all PRN medications.
  • Fills out outpatient forms, infection control forms, Lab forms, and X-ray requisitions as needed.
  • Provides adjustments in environmental factors such as lighting, ventilation, cleanliness, and order of the bedside unit and equipment.
  • Gives informative shift reports to the oncoming shift.
  • Administers medications per the 5 rights of administration.
  • Completes all occurrence reports in a timely manner and turns them into the ADON.
  • Consistently enters new orders in Matrix in a timely manner.
  • Consistently completes documentation for behavioral changes in the chart.
  • Completes weekly skin assessments accurately and provides a copy to the Wound Care Nurse (WCN).
  • Completes the behavioral form each shift.
  • Updates nursing and CNA care plans as needed.
  • Completes daily documentation for MAR, TAR, falls, med A, new/readmits.
  • Initiates new event charting in the chart for concerns/new findings with residents.
  • Reviews the message board throughout each shift, addresses as appropriate, and archives messages.
  • Follows Code of Conduct policy.
  • Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.
  • Completes annual educational requirements.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within the designated time.
  • Wears identification when on duty; uses the computerized time clock system correctly.
  • Completes in-services and returns them in a timely fashion.
  • Attends annual review and/or skills fair and department in-services, as scheduled.
  • Attempts to end conversations and other interactions in a positive manner; leaves others with a good impression of the Hospital Authority of Miller County and its employees.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission statement of the organization.
  • Treats others in a friendly, helpful manner.
  • Refers co-workers to proper sources when unable to provide an answer.
  • Interacts with others in a professional and friendly manner.
