Licensed Practical Nurse
About The Position
This position involves providing comprehensive health care to incarcerated individuals, including nursing assessments, physical examinations for injuries and illnesses, and performing nursing procedures. The role requires providing emergency first aid and CPR, responding to Code Blue or emergency situations promptly, and documenting all nursing functions according to DOC policy and procedures. Responsibilities include accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, planning, and evaluations. The nurse must be proficient in English for speaking, writing, and following instructions, and must adhere to all policies and procedures, including computer documentation. Additionally, the role involves general psychiatric nursing duties such as assessing patients for appropriate interventions, collaborating with an interdisciplinary team for client care, and monitoring/reporting changes in client condition. Communication with incarcerated individuals and off-site medical personnel is essential, as is providing training to individuals on medication and daily care, and to staff. The nurse will also assist with direct health services, including physician, dentist, optometrist, X-ray, and lab services.
Requirements
- Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator's Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
- Must be able to speak, write and follow instructions in the English language.
- Must be aware of and comply with all policies/procedures.
- Must complete computer documentation.
- State of Iowa or Compact State License Number must be included when submitting an application.
- Compact license holders are required to obtain an Iowa license within 60 days.
Responsibilities
- Plan, implement and evaluate health care for incarcerated individuals.
- Complete nursing assessments on incarcerated individuals.
- Perform physical examinations of all reported incarcerated individual injuries/illness (may include staff injuries).
- Perform nursing procedures.
- Provide emergency first aid and CPR.
- Respond to Code Blue or emergency situations in an expedient, timely manner.
- Document nursing functions completed utilizing DOC policy/procedures.
- Document nursing assessments, interventions, planning and evaluations.
- Accurately describe events or findings in documentation.
- Speak, write and follow instructions in the English language.
- Be aware of and comply with all policies/procedures.
- Complete computer documentation.
- Assess patients to identify appropriate psychiatric nursing interventions.
- Collaborate with members of an interdisciplinary health team to plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate client care.
- Monitor, assess, address, document and report symptoms and changes in client's condition.
- Deliver written and verbal information to Incarcerated Individuals and off-site medical personnel.
- Provide Incarcerated Individual training, i.e., medication, daily cares.
- Provide staff training.
- Assist with direct health services: Including assisting physician, dentist, optometrist, X-ray and/or lab services.
