Licensed Practical Nurse
About The Position
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) will work at LaCreek Health Center in Martin, South Dakota. LaCreek Health Center provides comprehensive healthcare services to the local community and surrounding areas as part of the Indian Health Service. The LPN will be responsible for obtaining patient history, performing quality control checks on patient care equipment, assisting in identifying patient needs and implementing care plans, documenting care, preparing patients for examinations, and communicating pertinent patient data. The role requires knowledge of emergency drugs, the ability to recognize and initiate measures for emergency situations, and the administration of prescribed orders. The LPN will also educate patients and families on medications, therapies, and diagnostic procedures, monitor the quality of care, respond to telephone inquiries, assist with administrative tasks, and administer oxygen, intravenous fluids, and medications according to policy. A strong emphasis is placed on demonstrating sensitivity to cultural diversity, race, gender, and other individual differences.
Requirements
- Completed a program in practical nursing of at least 9 months' duration combined with 1 year of nursing assistant experience; or successful completion of a 2-year degree in practical nursing.
- Passed the NCLEX-PN exam.
- Must possess a current, valid, unrestricted nursing license in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States.
- Valid American Heart Association certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- Two years of nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical nursing or patient care facility.
Responsibilities
- Obtain patient history and patient family history.
- Perform quality control checks and operator maintenance for a variety of patient care equipment.
- Assist in identifying patient needs and implementing the plan of care.
- Document care given and patient response in the medical record.
- Prepare patient for physical examination.
- Communicate pertinent patient data to the appropriate provider.
- Possess knowledge of actions and usual dosages of most commonly used emergency drugs and their location.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate appropriate resuscitative measures.
- Conduct prescribed nurse initiated, nurse practitioner, and physician orders and document in patient medical record.
- Assist in patient/family education regarding prescribed medications/therapies/diagnostic procedures.
- Assess patient/family knowledge level, implement plan of instructions and record patient/family demonstrated level of understanding.
- Assure content and correctness of a prepared report and sign document to validate its content.
- Participate in monitoring quality of care according to professional standards and established procedures.
- Respond to telephone inquiries regarding ward services and/or follow-up ancillary reports.
- Assist with ward related administrative tasks.
- Administer oxygen, intravenous fluids and prescribed medications in accordance with the Client policy.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to cultural diversity, race, gender, and other individual differences in the workforce and in the community.
