About The Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse provides health care to students and staff, supporting the maintenance of optimal health standards for all students. The LPN serves as an advocate for students’ health rights, a consultant regarding student health concerns, and a promoter of sound health care practices within the school setting. Successful incumbents may be considered for advancement into nursing, clinical coordination, or other roles based on organizational need, qualifications, and readiness.

Requirements

  • Current New York State Licensed Practical Nurse certification and current CPR certification.
  • Nursing knowledge related to medication administration, infection control, universal precautions, documentation, triage, and school health practices.
  • Must have or achieve certification within 3 months of hire in the following: First Aid Certification, CPR Certification, UKERU
  • Must be comfortable using computers and technology in a professional setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required, or the ability and willingness to learn and use organizational software systems and electronic documentation platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Provides primary health care in the school setting and serves as a direct link between health care providers, families, staff, and community agencies to facilitate continuity of health care for students.
  • Maintains compliance with Beyond Support Network clinical policies and procedures, NYSED policies, and New York State Department of Health requirements.
  • Performs duties consistent with professional nursing standards, confidentiality requirements, and applicable state and local statutes and regulations.
  • Provides first aid for staff in accordance with Beyond Support Network policies and procedures.
  • Notifies families or emergency contacts of changes in student health status and evaluations.
  • Follows communicable disease control procedures and informs parents and staff regarding school exclusion and readmission policies.
  • Monitors students for evidence of abuse or neglect and reports concerns as mandated by law.
  • Educates families and staff through health training and literature, as needed.
  • Administers and documents medications, medical testing, and treatments in accordance with provider orders, parental permission, agency policy, and state and county guidelines.
  • Maintains current physician orders and parental permissions in accordance with Beyond Support Network policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates with the instructional team as needed to support student health and educational participation.
  • Tracks current physical and immunization records for students and requests updates as needed.
  • Maintains accurate, current medical information in agency databases and clinical records while assuring confidentiality.
  • Provides universal precaution protective equipment and supplies to staff as appropriate.
  • Completes accurate documentation for staff accident reports and forwards originals to Human Resources as required.
  • Monitors the school environment and reports recommendations to reduce health and safety hazards.
  • Assures proper storage of medications in a double-lock cabinet.
  • Maintains required documentation, including nursing service forms, seizure reports, medication administration records, treatment records, telephone communication logs, and accident and injury reports in an accurate, concise, and timely manner.
  • Utilizes Ukeru procedures in the School Program when necessary, conducts body checks following physical interventions, and documents in accordance with Ukeru protocol.
  • Consistently complies with all agency policies and procedures and maintains high professional standards in interactions with staff and families.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Agency Clinical Nurse Coordinator and/or Director of Clinical Services.
