About The Position

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), Office of Special Education and Early Education (OSEEL), Division of State Schools, Kentucky School for the Blind (KSB) in Louisville (Jefferson County) has an opening for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). This is a 2nd shift position with hours from Sunday-Thursday, 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed in Kentucky as a practical nurse or must have a valid work permit issued by the Kentucky Board of Nursing.
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.
  • Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of a Licensed Physician or an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or a Registered Nurse (RN) as permitted under KRS 314, perform duties in the care of the ill, injured or the infirmary at the Kentucky School for the Blind.
  • Evaluate, screen, and treat students on an as needed basis returning them to school or dorm.
  • Obtain vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, respiration's, temperature, etc.).
  • Provide accurate, up to date screening data for doctor's use.
  • Ensure all lab and assessment information is available, organized, and accurate.
  • Administer and chart all medications and treatments.
  • Give prescribed medications/treatment, know benefits/side effects of medications.
  • Chart info accurately and promptly.
  • Prepare medication for home, weekend stays and extended dorm stays.
  • Perform added duties such as tube feedings.
  • Set up appointments for students to see a medical doctor if needed.
  • Perform lice checks as needed.
  • Perform inventory checks and restock items as needed (medicine cups, drinking cups, etc.).
  • Disinfect exam room, medicine room, countertops, tables, etc. daily.
  • Disinfect beds after sick children have used them.
  • Launder soiled bed linens and clothing as needed.
  • Assist with staff education (medication training) and student preventative education (flu prevention, hand washing, etc.).
  • Work with and assist with vision screenings, scoliosis screenings, PT/OT, and mental health therapist.
  • Notify parents, dorm staff and other staff members of student's meds and treatment.
  • Notify medical doctor or supervisor if needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
