About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – South Region – is accepting applications for one full-time, Licensed Practical Nurse position located at Hartford Regional Center (71 Mountain Road), based in Newington, CT. This position is for the second (2nd) shift, working 70 hours bi-weekly. The schedule involves working Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Week 1, with regular days off on Monday and Thursday. In Week 2, the schedule is Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with regular days off on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Incumbents must be flexible to meet agency needs and may be required to travel between locations. In this role, you will assist doctors and nurses in general care, administer medications including insulin injections, document medications, perform narcotic counts, report changes in individuals to doctors, transcribe medication orders, perform simple nursing treatments, monitor and assist with personal hygiene, and report on individual conditions and behavior. You may also perform duties as Lead or Charge of shift as required.

Requirements

• License or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing OR hold a Multistate or Compact Licensed Practical Nurse license.

Nice To Haves

• Experience providing nursing services to adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
• Experience communicating with non-verbal individuals.
• Experience with basic nursing skills including, but not limited to: administering medication and nutrition via G-Tube or J-Tube; glucose monitoring, insulin administration; respiratory treatments, colostomy; cecostomy; urostomy care; wound care; and catheterization.
• Experience supporting individuals that may exhibit challenging behaviors.
• Experience communicating with interdisciplinary teams, off-site providers, families, and guardians.
• Experience using Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Excel, Teams, and Word.

Responsibilities

• Assist doctors and nurses in the general care and treatment of individuals
• Measure doses and administer medication including insulin injections
• Document medications using appropriate forms
• Perform narcotic counts
• Report changes in individuals to doctors
• Transcribe doctors medication orders
• Perform simple nursing treatments
• Monitor and assist with general individual needs including personal hygiene
• Report on individual conditions and behavior
• Perform duties as Lead or Charge of shift as required
• Perform related duties as required
• Render bedside care or mental health services to individuals with physical disabilities and/or an intellectual disability in instances where the services of a registered nurse are not required
• Check and may administer intravenous medications
• Ensure that restraints are applied correctly
• Dispense certain medications in doctor’s absence
• Apply topical medication
• Take and chart temperatures, pulses and respirations
• Keep the unit safe and healthy
• Administer enemas or suppositories
• Perform Foley catheterization care
• Orient individuals concerning medications and their use
• May perform emergency first aid
• May drive individuals to necessary appointments/outings
