Requirements

  • License to practice nursing as a licensed practical nurse issued by Ohio Board of Nursing pursuant to Section 4723 Ohio Revised Code & proof of completion of an approved course in medication administration.
  • Note: Licensed Practical Nurses who administer dialysis treatment must possess Certification in IV Therapy pursuant to Section 4723.17 Ohio Revised Code.

Responsibilities

  • Performs nursing procedures under direction of psychiatric/MR Nurse: transcribes physician's orders; administers controlled (e.g., narcotics, minor tranquilizers) & non-controlled (e.g., aspirin) physician prescribed medications in oral, rectal, topical or injection form & physician ordered treatments (e.g., administers oxygen, applies sterile dressings, inserts catheters, reinserts gastrostomy tubes, suctions, collects specimens) to residents with mental retardation & developmental disabilities; checks residents for positive & negative reactions to medications &/or treatments; reports negative reactions to Psychiatric/MR Nurse &/or physician immediately & documents incident; assists physician(s) (e.g., with physical exams, treatment, &/or laboratory tests); treats medical emergencies (e.g., first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation) & responds to other emergencies (e.g., restrains residents, applies Heimlich maneuver, in case of fire evacuates residents); charts resident records; prepares & counts medication; orders medication; provides medication instructions to residents & other staff members; orders equipment & supplies (e.g., forms, sterile supplies, catheters, tube feeding equipment) to meet needs of each resident.
  • Provides general nursing to residents, takes vital signs, assists with personal hygiene, grooming, eating, toileting, mobility); assists in training of residents in the above areas; observes, documents & reports residents' condition(s) (e.g., symptoms of illness, medication reactions, resident behavior response to treatment) to Psychiatric/MR Nurse &/or physician; assists Psychiatric/MR Nurse with resident's documentation & quarterly Health Assessments & Nursing Care Plan; implements Nursing Care Plan to meet established goals for each resident (e.g., assures medication is delivered & taken as prescribed & that residents have adequate intake & output of fluids); maintains medical records & performs clerical tasks (e.g., filing, duplicating, answering phone) as required by NODC Directives & Nursing Policy & Procedures; monitors resident’s medical files monthly.
  • Monitors & maintains adequate nursing/medical supplies on the units; attends specials, annuals, & placement meetings; directs TPW's in providing unskilled health care to residents; assists Psychiatric/MR Nurse in orientation of new employees; mentors nursing students during clinical rotation when needed; assists Psych/MR Nurse with data collection for admissions/discharges; communicates (i.e., verbally & in writing) significant information to immediate supervisor & staff members of all shifts; performs other related duties (e.g., participates in in-services (e.g., first aid, fire safety, CPR, PACES); attends meetings, workshops & seminars; serves on NODC committees; participates in the Quality Assurance process; monitors environment of living units for Health, Safety & Sanitation; reports &/or corrects violations).
