About The Position

This position functions as a part-time LPN in the School Health Program with the Department of Health in Collier County (DOH). This position requires working with school health screening teams to provide vision, hearing, scoliosis and growth and development screenings along with follow-up services to students in mandated grades for Collier County Public and Non-Public Schools. The incumbent must be able to work independently on specific tasks and integrate and work with other DOH staff assisting with school screenings. This position performs home visits for students referred for health issues such as head lice and must always assure compliance with Florida Department of Health securities policy. This position will assist with outreach clinics and outbreak emergencies. This part-time LPN position also assists in the Immunization clinic and with Kid Care outreach programs when necessary. A total of 500 hours will be allocated to the position with an expected average of 24-28 hours per week when school is in session from August 2025 – January 2026. Emergency duty requirements may change time and hours. Expected pay will be $25.00 per hour.

Requirements

  • Ability to effectively educate and counsel clients regarding health-related information.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information in accordance with state and federal statutes, rules, regulations, and Department of Health policy as it relates to Information Custodian.
  • Knowledge of School Health screening and referral processes or a pediatric health environment.
  • Ability to develop health related presentations and provide training.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with health care providers, community organizations and school personnel and other DOH staff.
  • Knowledge and skill of providing services to the pediatric population and school health services.
  • Ability to learn and follow screening process and procedures.
  • Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques.
  • Skill in use of computers, including Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Ability to independently utilize equipment and computer systems within two months of hire.
  • Ability to function effectively with intermittent supervision.
  • Ability to use continuous quality improvement methods and tools to monitor program effectiveness and outcomes.
  • Ability to have transportation daily.
  • Ability to lift and transport screening equipment up to 50 pounds and move freely around.
  • Ability to work variable start times/total daily work hours to accommodate the school schedules during screening activities.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple program focus areas.
  • Skill in use of computers and Microsoft Applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Ability to enter and track data into an automated client management system.
  • Ability to work effectively with clients, community partners and other DOH staff.
  • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality.
  • Licensure as a Florida Licensed Practical Nurse in accordance with F.S. Statute 464.
  • American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification.
  • Valid Florida Drivers License and Reliable Transportation.
  • Ability to lift equipment of up to 50 pounds and be able to move around freely.
  • Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
  • All Florida Department of Health positions require the incumbent to be able to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Responsibilities

  • Assures collaboration with the Public and Non-Public School Screening coordinators in each assigned school for screening area preparation, acquisition of support resources and completion of data/documentation elements necessary for annual and follow-up student health screenings.
  • Functions as the liaison between DOH – Collier staff and volunteers, and the Collier County Public School staff to accomplish scheduled screening services for vision, hearing, growth and development and scoliosis.
  • Assists in the coordination of DOH-Collier staff and volunteers during school assignments on the screening day.
  • Takes direction from assigned staff delegated to coordinate screenings and when required provides non-licensed staff with input on decision making.
  • Incumbent will ensure that they remain in compliance of their delegated authority and reports to Lead Community Health Nursing Consultant Nurse immediately when necessary.
  • Incumbent ensures that they never ever act outside scope of practice and remains accountable for reporting others who do so.
  • Works with all staff and volunteers involved in the school screenings to provide needed onsite and off-site training and monitors performance as needed.
  • Provides and/or assists with staff development presentation to School Board of Collier County staff, including but not limited to First Aid, Epi-Pen, and Medication Administration as assigned in accordance with the annual schedule and ad-hoc needs.
  • Ensures all referral for health issues including head lice from NCH school health nurses are followed up on and home visit completed and documented when necessary.
  • Actively ensures screening follow-up on children referred for care from health screenings. Interacts with school screening designee, DOH – Collier team members, parents and others involved in the follow-up process to provide/obtain necessary information and services.
  • Assists with methods of acquiring data sets needed to meet the requirements of school health reporting and monitoring in the Health Management System (HMS) are met.
  • Assists the CHN Consultant for School Health with data gathering for the annual School Health Report.
  • Ensures outcomes of referrals are recorded and filed in the students’ cumulative record at the school and in the DOH-Collier referral documents at assigned schools.
  • Participates in the Quality Improvement (QI) monitoring related to follow-up activities.
  • Participates in the maintenance of equipment used in school health screening activities, assuring that the equipment is operational, current in calibration and that enough supplies are present for application purposes.
  • Assists in the Immunizations department during back to school events. Will be cross trained to help with coverage in immunization clinic when necessary.
  • Assists with Kid Care outreach activities such as Health Fairs and Back-to School activities.
  • Assists with outreach clinics and outbreak emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.
