About The Position

This role supports the delivery of medical services by providing direct medical care within the scope of Licensed Practical Nursing or Registered Nursing practice as outlined by the Virginia Nurse Practice Act. The position also involves mentoring medical assistants, RNs, and LPNs. A significant aspect of this role includes telephone triage, where the nurse assesses patient problems over the phone, requiring strong clinical judgment, listening skills, and critical thinking. The nurse will develop assessments based on conversations, handle a wide spectrum of medical conditions, and make decisions on appropriate care, which may include self-care advice, referral to a primary care physician, scheduling an appointment, or instructing emergency assistance. The role demands careful decision-making based on protocols, especially in high-risk areas, and meticulous documentation of advice and patient responses. The nurse is expected to be considerate, patient, calm, and communicate in a caring manner, while also honing critical analysis skills. Additional duties include directing patients to the correct care method, maintaining accurate records, retrieving messages, creating documents, editing medical records, reporting to providers, and following up with patients to document condition changes and provide essential patient education.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited program for Licensed Practical Nurses or Registered Nurses
  • Licensed by the Virginia State Board of Nursing or from a compact state
  • At least 2 years of general patient care experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse
  • Dedication to detail and accuracy.

  • Should have experience with or knowledge of medical office systems, supplies and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs tasks pertinent to age of patient (infancy to geriatric)
  • Maintains accurate inventory of medical supplies; assists in the selection of division equipment and supplies.
  • Performs all nursing procedures as directed by the clinician according to the guidelines in the Nursing Procedure Manual.
  • Assists in quality assurance and control.
  • Supports a team-based approach to patient-centered medical care.
  • Participates in the continuing educational process.
  • Assists in the efficient flow of patients
  • Attends work as scheduled.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Assesses patient problems over the phone.
  • Listens carefully to patient concerns, interpreting subtle indications like tone of voice, hesitations, or incomplete responses.
  • Asks appropriate questions to assess patient problems without visual observations or diagnostic tests.
  • Develops an assessment of the patient’s problem based on conversation.
  • Makes decisions on appropriate care, which may include self-care advice, referral to a primary care physician, making an appointment, or instructing the patient to contact 911 for emergency assistance.
  • Determines whether a patient needs care and what kind of care.
  • Directs the patient to the correct specialist, clinic, or hospital.
  • Provides patient education when appropriate.
  • Makes decisions based on protocols.
  • Exercises skill and care in giving advice, ensuring the appropriate standard of care for a specific case.
  • Documents both advice given and the patient’s responses.
  • Directs patients correctly to the right care method.
  • Maintains accurate records of all calls and corresponding details.
  • Retrieves messages, creates proper documents, edits medical records, and reports to the respective providers, whenever necessary.
  • Follows up with patients and reports their condition.
  • Documents information regarding patient improvement.
  • Provides proper directions to the right provider if the condition has worsened.
  • Records all changes.
