This role supports the delivery of medical services by providing direct medical care within the scope of Licensed Practical Nursing or Registered Nursing practice as outlined by the Virginia Nurse Practice Act. The position also involves mentoring medical assistants, RNs, and LPNs. A significant aspect of this role includes telephone triage, where the nurse assesses patient problems over the phone, requiring strong clinical judgment, listening skills, and critical thinking. The nurse will develop assessments based on conversations, handle a wide spectrum of medical conditions, and make decisions on appropriate care, which may include self-care advice, referral to a primary care physician, scheduling an appointment, or instructing emergency assistance. The role demands careful decision-making based on protocols, especially in high-risk areas, and meticulous documentation of advice and patient responses. The nurse is expected to be considerate, patient, calm, and communicate in a caring manner, while also honing critical analysis skills. Additional duties include directing patients to the correct care method, maintaining accurate records, retrieving messages, creating documents, editing medical records, reporting to providers, and following up with patients to document condition changes and provide essential patient education.
