Requirements

  • Current full practicing licensure with the BC College of Nurses and Nurse Practitioners.
  • Education in the field of palliation, or other education in other fields of nursing study supportive of candidacy for palliative care.
  • Criminal Record Check for the Vulnerable Sector will be required
  • Two years of experience as an LPN, preferably in palliative care.
  • Support for and an understanding of mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
  • Ability to provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility.
  • Acceptance & willingness to work within the policies/mission statement of The Salvation Army.
  • Must be in good health, physically and mentally able to carry out the assigned duties in the working environment.
  • Must be able to type, walk, bend over, reach, and complete other physical tasks required for nursing care.
  • Must be able to lift, pull, and push up to 23 kg.
  • Must be able to work in rotating shifts.
  • Must be able to manage time effectively, prioritize work, and possess problem solving skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and give and understand written and oral instructions.
  • Must enjoy teamwork and have effective interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Must be able to read and understand written reports (in charts and in Point Click Care)
  • Able to use computers and computer software proficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility for the delivery of care for each resident, ensuring that all personal and nursing care is provided in accordance with the mission of The Salvation Army, agency, regulatory and established ethical guidelines and requirements.
  • Monitors the treatment regime and health status including physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological needs to ensure the safety and well-being of the resident.
  • Applies critical thinking skills to assess the resident’s situation, to detect subtle or significant changes in symptoms, in comfort and knows when action is necessary.
  • Performs nursing care to residents including administering prescribed medication and treatments, and observing, recording and reporting symptoms and changes in resident condition; offers compassionate care by remaining open to the goals and values of residents.
  • Communicates clearly and respectfully with all members of the hospice team, with residents and their family members and is able to collaborate toward arriving effectively and patiently at the best practice and best care of residents.
  • Carries out established procedures to offer care for residents, is aware of the upkeep of the facility’s equipment (such as fridge temperatures, battery operated devices, emergency equipment, and oxygen concentrators) and uses supplies properly.
  • Provides caring environment to residents and families including facilitating participation of resident and family in care plans.
  • Maintains pertinent records and ensures all documentation is accurate and complete. Maintains strict confidentiality of information with regard to residents and families. Documents in electronic health record and in the E-MAR all medication reconciliations.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities such as in-services to maintain current knowledge and practice.
  • Maintains relationships with all external health agencies, professionals, and the community.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
