The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in General Internal Medicine provides nursing care to assigned patients under the direct supervision of a registered nurse (RN) or other assigned supervisor. The LPN accepts delegation from the RN, assigned supervisor, and provider to meet the needs of patients and families, collects data through observation, and communicates information to support patient assessment and care planning. Care is delivered according to the patient care plan, organizational policies and procedures, and principles of relationship-based care. Patient visits may include reviewing health histories and medications, administering immunizations, performing ear lavage, conducting focused nutrition assessments, and completing blood pressure visits. Telehealth work may include collecting information before provider visits, researching prescription discrepancies, and facilitating prior authorization denials. The LPN collaborates daily with providers and other care-team members, including desk operations specialists, patient appointment service specialists, interpreters, and medical secretaries. The role calls for strong communication, mentoring, and instruction skills, and may include participation in committees, projects, and quality improvement initiatives.
