The 5300 Medical-Surgical Renal/Pulmonary Unit at TriHealth Bethesda North is a 43-bed unit specializing in the care of patients with renal and pulmonary conditions, including COPD exacerbations and dialysis complications. Our diverse patient population provides a dynamic environment that allows nurses to develop a broad range of skills and knowledge in a fast-paced environment. We are committed to creating a positive learning atmosphere for both new graduates and experienced nurses. Our team focuses on professional growth, mastering essential skills such as peritoneal dialysis, time management, and delivering compassionate patient care. Nurses are equipped with significant technical knowledge related to the respiratory system, the ability to detect aberrant respiratory functions through auscultation, and a deep understanding of renal clearance and medications. Our unit encourages and supports nurses in obtaining professional certifications, including Medical-Surgical (MED-SURG), Geriatric (GERO-BC), and Certified Peritoneal Dialysis Nurse (CPDN). Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved technical, professional, or vocational program in Nursing
  • Practical Nursing licensure required
  • NAPNES certification-if graduated prior to 1988
  • Working more than 1 year full-time or 2 years part-time as an LPN in acute care
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS)
  • Basic knowledge of the Biological, Physical, Behavioral, Social, and Nursing sciences

Responsibilities

  • Collects and documents patient data and observations per unit/TriHealth guidelines.
  • Communicates assessment findings and patient needs to the RN and interdisciplinary team.
  • Contributes to development, implementation, and updates of the patient plan of care, including discharge planning.
  • Provides safe, therapeutic, and patient‑centered care while maintaining dignity and rights.
  • Prioritizes workload and recognizes changes in patient condition, initiating emergency measures as needed.
  • Implements and documents nursing interventions based on clinical data, standards of care, and patient outcomes.
  • Performs technical skills, administers medications within scope, and uses equipment safely per policy.
  • Accurately interprets and executes physician orders and maintains unit competency requirements.
  • Evaluates and communicates patient response to care in a timely manner.
  • Promotes professional growth, supports process improvement, and maintains effective interdisciplinary relationships.
