About The Position

This is a PRN (as needed) position for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Greensville Correctional Center, offering flexible staffing with a maximum of 29 hours per week. The position is currently approved for a temporary enhanced hourly rate due to critical staffing needs. LPNs provide evidence-based nursing care, administer medications, provide first aid and basic life support, maintain communication with security and treatment staff, and document patient information. The role requires the ability to work varied hours and locations as assigned and may involve other duties or locations to meet the needs of the Department. This is a wage position limited to 1,500 hours per agency during a 12-month period (May 1 - April 30) and offers no state benefits.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
  • Working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of practical or general nursing care
  • Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals
  • Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers’ orders in applying treatments
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care
  • Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a Corrections or Law enforcement environment
  • Experience or related training in delivery of general nursing and emergency medical care

Responsibilities

  • Provide evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Screen for sick call.
  • Administer medications.
  • Provide first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
  • Maintain open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan.
  • Record all pertinent information into the medical record.
  • Interact with other departments as needed.
  • Promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
  • Work hours, days and locations as assigned.
  • Be capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
  • Perform assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
