About The Position

This position involves providing comprehensive healthcare to incarcerated individuals, including nursing assessments, physical examinations for injuries and illnesses, and performing nursing procedures. The role requires providing emergency first aid and CPR, responding to Code Blue situations, and documenting all nursing functions according to DOC policy and procedures. Additionally, the Licensed Practical Nurse will perform general psychiatric nursing duties, including assessing patients for appropriate interventions, collaborating with an interdisciplinary health team, and monitoring patient conditions. Communication with incarcerated individuals and off-site medical personnel is essential, as is providing training on medications and daily care to individuals and staff. The role also includes assisting with direct health services such as physician, dentist, optometrist, X-ray, and lab services.

Requirements

  • Licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the Iowa Board of Nursing or licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact Administrator's Agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
  • Must be able to speak, write and follow instructions in the English language.
  • Must be aware of and comply with all policies/procedures.
  • Must complete computer documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement and evaluate health care for incarcerated individuals.
  • Complete nursing assessments on incarcerated individuals.
  • Perform physical examinations of all reported incarcerated individual injuries/illness (may include staff injuries).
  • Perform nursing procedures.
  • Provide emergency first aid and CPR.
  • Respond to Code Blue or emergency situations.
  • Document nursing functions completed utilizing DOC policy/procedures.
  • Document nursing assessments, interventions, planning and evaluations.
  • Assess patients to identify appropriate psychiatric nursing interventions.
  • Collaborate with members of an interdisciplinary health team to plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate client care.
  • Monitor, assess, address, document and report symptoms and changes in client's condition.
  • Deliver written and verbal information to incarcerated individuals and off-site medical personnel.
  • Provide incarcerated individual training (e.g., medication, daily cares).
  • Provide staff training.
  • Assist with direct health services, including assisting physician, dentist, optometrist, X-ray and/or lab services.
