About The Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a supervisory position that works under the guidance of the Registered Nurse. This role is responsible for assessing, monitoring, implementing, evaluating, and documenting Resident care. The LPN collaborates to improve team and organizational performance in providing enhanced customer service for Residents and families. The LPN is accountable for their nursing practice as defined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) and the Continuing Competency Program (CCP). They are responsible for maintaining current and valid registration and adhering to care centre protocols. This is a temporary position with a 0.7 FTE for day shifts (7am to 3pm).

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Licensed Practical Nurses.
  • Current Registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta.
  • Certified for administration of oral medications, narcotics, and subcutaneous injections.
  • Completion of Physical Assessment Course.
  • RAI/MDS COMPETENCY IS REQUIRED
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English language.
  • Must have good knowledge, attitude, and skills in dealing with geriatric and/or physically and mentally disabled persons and their families.
  • This position requires maturity, tact, and the ability to relate to all levels of staff.
  • ACTIVE CLHA REGISTERATION REQUIRED
  • A CURRENT AND CLEAR CRIMINAL RECORDS CHECK COMPLETED IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS IS REQUIRED FOR ALL NEW EMPLOYEES
  • Satisfactory proof of COVID-19 vaccination and any required booster vaccination, or a valid exemption.

Nice To Haves

  • Intramuscular injection course and certification in CPR is preferred.
  • Previous experience in geriatrics or long-term care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as an advocate to ensure that the Resident's needs are met.
  • Participates in staff development and orientation.
  • Adheres to and promotes Infection Control practices.
  • Assess, monitor, implement, evaluate, and document Resident care.
  • Responsible for Resident admissions and discharges.
  • Communicates with Residents, families, and staff.
  • Reports changes in Resident status to RN.
  • Prepare and administer all medications including narcotics via various routes (Oral, Subcutaneous, Transdermal, Vaginal, Rectal, I.M. with certification, G-tube medications, Inhalations, Sublingual, Eye/ear GTTS).
  • Prepare and administer insulins (must be double checked and co-signed by another RN or LPN).
  • May administer heparin or adrenalin (must be double checked and co-signed by another RN or LPN).
  • Administer PRN medications including narcotics and standing orders.
  • Independently initiate standing protocols for bowel care.
  • Check and sign drug deliveries from Pharmacy.
  • Supervise and ensure competent care is provided by team members.
  • Assists with the enforcement of Fire and Safety and OH & S regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of accident and injury prevention.
  • Adheres to safe work practices and procedures.
