About The Position

This is a part-time position at Lawrenceville Correctional Center, offering a flexible staffing arrangement for Licensed Practical Nurses seeking additional hours, with an average of no more than 29 hours per week. LPNs are responsible for providing evidence-based nursing care using the nursing process, principles, practices, and techniques of general nursing care under the direction of a Registered Nurse. Key duties include screening for sick call, administering medications, providing first aid and basic life support, maintaining communication with security and treatment staff, documenting pertinent information in the medical record, and interacting with other departments. The role also emphasizes promoting continued competence through education and certification, with a focus on correctional nursing. Nurses must be able to work assigned hours, days, and locations, and be available for coverage as needed to meet institutional requirements. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department. This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Must possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia LPN license issued by the board of nursing or a multi-state compact license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not licensed, the NCLEX-PN exam must be scheduled at the time of application)
Working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of practical or general nursing care.
Demonstrated ability to screen complaints of physical ailments and refer necessary cases to other medical professionals.
Ability to maintain appropriate documentation, provide first aid, and carry out providers' orders in applying treatment.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to administer practical nursing care.
Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire

Responsibilities

Provide evidence-based nursing care utilizing the nursing process, principles, practices and techniques of general nursing care as determined by Standards of Practice under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
Screens for sick call, administers medications, and provides first aid and basic life support to patients and employees as needed.
Maintains open lines of communication with security and treatment staff while providing input and feedback to assist the facility provider in organizing a treatment plan.
Records all pertinent information into the medical record.
Interacts with other departments as needed.
Promotes continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
Ability to work hours, days and locations as assigned along with being capable and available to provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
