About The Position

This position is for either a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or a Medical Assistant (MA) in an ambulatory setting at UVA Dermatology Clinic. The role involves providing direct patient care, patient education, and general support under the supervision of a physician or RN. The position requires serving all age populations and understanding their functional and developmental needs. Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse Program (for LPN)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required (for MA)
  • None Required experience (for LPN)
  • None required experience (for MA)
  • Licensed to practice as a Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia prior to onboarding (for LPN)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider BLS certification required
  • Currently enrolled or have completion of a Medical Assistant Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) and/or hold a current Medical Assistant Certification through a recognized national professional association such as the AAMA (American Association of Medical Assistants), the AMT (American Medical Technologists), NAHP (The National Association of Healthcare Professions), the ARMA (American Registry of Medical Assistants), or the NHA (National Healthcare Association) (for MA)
  • Medical Assistant Certification must be obtained within 6 months from the date of hire (for MA)

Responsibilities

  • Providing direct patient care, ongoing education, and reinforcement of care plans.
  • Providing general support in an ambulatory setting under the direction or supervision of the patient’s physician or LIP/RN designee.
  • Assisting the registered nurse and/or provider through data collection concerning the physical, psychological, social, and cultural dimensions of patients.
  • Organizing and prioritizing nursing care activities considering the needs of the patients and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Implementing age-appropriate interventions based on individual patient’s needs as directed by the registered nurse/provider.
  • Assisting in evaluating the effectiveness of care given in progressing patients toward desired outcomes.
  • Providing a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
  • Assisting in assuring effective and efficient clinic operations while maintaining consistent and accurate communication with team members, referring providers, and patients.
  • Completing standardized rooming and performing clinical intake, data collection, and documentation.
  • Providing clinical support to licensed healthcare professionals during examinations and procedures, including preparing laboratory specimens, performing testing, cleaning instruments, disposing of contaminated supplies, performing wound care, and administering medications.
  • Maintaining supplies and equipment.
  • Documenting and capturing charges for clinical support services rendered within the patient visit.
  • Performing administrative support responsibilities, including drafting letters, assisting with forms, facilitating scheduling, pending medication refills, assisting with in-basket messaging, and assisting with clinic/chart preparation.
  • Demonstrating teamwork in the delivery of patient care and recognizing the importance of time-sensitive issues.
  • Assuming responsibility for professional development of self and others according to departmental policy.
