About The Position

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) reports to the Director of Health Services and works under the day-to-day supervision of the building Registered Nurse (RN). This role collaborates with other members of the healthcare and educational team to provide appropriate healthcare services to each scholar. The LPN will administer medications and treatments, collect and document health status data, follow written healthcare plans, administer first aid, and communicate with various stakeholders to facilitate coordination of services. The position also involves managing the health office environment, attending meetings and in-services, and potentially accompanying children with medical needs. The LPN is expected to maintain knowledge of current trends in the field, carry out educational activities, interact positively with colleagues and the community, and provide input into the LPN role. Good attendance, punctuality, and adherence to call-in procedures are essential for ensuring a safe and healthy environment for scholars.

Requirements

  • Active Michigan LPN license.
  • Current CPR and First aid certification.
  • Completed at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education; or Obtained an associate’s or higher degree.
  • Demonstrated experience with medically fragile patients (i.e. diabetes, seizures, tracheostomy, etc.).
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance and punctuality.
  • Demonstrated good communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with parents, the public and staff members in a tactful and courteous manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with confidential information.
  • Demonstrated ability to participate as a member of the team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse environment.
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills.
  • Stand, walk, run, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear (in a quiet or noisy environment) including auscultation using a stethoscope.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.
  • Close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust/focus.
  • Bend, push and/or pull loads, such as pushing children in wheelchairs or moving/rearranging furniture or assisting scholars with standing, transferring and walking.
  • Physically restrain scholars, when required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides medications and treatments to identified scholars under the supervision by the RN, and according to the districts policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Applies knowledge of common medications and treatments to evaluate the side effects and effectiveness of services provided.
  • Collects and documents data regarding the child’s health status, (such as immunizations and nursing care) consistent with documentation guidelines.
  • Provides written reports as required.
  • Communicates with the registered nurse essential information regarding treatments provided and observations of the child’s response.
  • Follows written health care plans.
  • Administers first aid and care to children who are ill or injured according to district protocols and under the direction of the RN.
  • Communicates information from the child, family, physicians and other members of the health care/educational team to the registered nurse in order to facilitate coordination of services.
  • Arranges and manages the physical setting of the health office.
  • May be required to attend general staff meetings as requested by the principal.
  • May be required to attend monthly nursing meetings and in-services.
  • May be required to accompany children that have medical needs during.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and development in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related conferences, in-services, etc.
  • Responsible for carrying out educational activities as requested by the principal.
  • Interact with co-workers, administration, scholars, parents and the community in positive, supportive and cooperative ways.
  • Provides input into the development of the LPN role.
  • Responsible for good attendance and punctuality and following call-in procedures to assure a safe and healthy environment for scholars.
  • Consistently demonstrate dependable attendance and punctuality.
  • Other duties as assigned.
