Functions as part of the hemodialysis health care team in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for assigned patients in accordance with FMCNA policies, procedures, and training and in compliance with regulations set forth by the corporation, state, and federal agencies. The LPN/LVN provides patient care under the direct supervision of the Hemodialysis Registered Nurse for assigned patients in the acute setting, excluding Intensive Care Units as permitted by state requirements. They perform all technical aspects of dialysis procedures, monitor treatments, and report any unusual incidents or problems to the RN. The role supports the FMCNA commitment to quality enhancement and actively participates in process improvement activities. With documented competency, the LPN/LVN may set up and prime equipment, evaluate vascular access, obtain vital signs, perform cannulation, and collect specimens. Accurate documentation in the hospital Electronic Medical System (EMS) and Acute Care Electronic System (ACES) is crucial. The LPN/LVN must identify and intervene in intradialytic problems, monitor patient response, and ensure safety alarms are used. They also re-enforce education provided by the RN.
