About The Position

This is a full-time position for a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in an Ambulatory setting, specifically within the OB/GYN Reproductive Endocrinology department at the University Group Practice in Winston Salem. The role involves preparing patients for examinations, performing laboratory procedures, assisting physicians with procedures, administering medications, providing patient education, and managing patient care follow-ups. The LPN will also perform advanced clinical tasks, maintain exam rooms and equipment, and participate in quality improvement activities. A strong understanding of age-specific patient care is required.

Requirements

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license issued by the state in which the team member practices.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 45 days unless department leader has determined it is not required.
  • Completion of an accredited or approved program in Practical Nursing.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with patients, staff, and physicians.
  • Excellent organization, prioritization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient computer skills including keyboarding, navigation within a windows operating system, and use of electronic mail with exposure to electronic medical records systems.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and rooms patients for exams by obtaining vital signs and documenting/updating health information.
  • Performs laboratory procedures such as strep tests, wound cultures, and specimen collection using aseptic technique and infection control guidelines.
  • Assists physicians/providers with procedures and surgeries like pelvic exams, allergy scratch testing, EMG, colposcopy, etc.
  • Administers medications, including immunizations, antibiotics, pain medications, vitamins, topical agents, and insulin, under physician/provider orders.
  • Initiates, maintains, and discontinues IV therapy, administering selected fluids with pre-mixed medications.
  • Provides basic patient education on tasks, skills, treatment, and self-care.
  • Follows through with procedure or test requests, prescription refills, new appointment times, and referrals.
  • Refers questions to registered nurses and physicians/providers per scope of practice and relays information back to patients.
  • Communicates accurate and timely information regarding patient conditions with physicians and the healthcare team.
  • Performs advanced clinical tasks such as suture/staple removal, catheterization, audiograms, laboratory procedures (throat/nose culture, drug screen, phlebotomy), EKG, spirometry, Holter monitor application, casting, and complex wound care.
  • Organizes and prepares exam rooms, lab, and work areas, including cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, and maintaining equipment.
  • Performs patient positioning and transporting duties, requiring lifting and pushing/pulling with proper technique.
  • Completes routine maintenance and quality monitoring of clinic equipment.
  • Participates in patient-centered initiatives, care management, and performance/quality improvement activities.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills for age-appropriate patient care, including growth and development over the life span.
