About The Position

The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse - Corrections to perform direct nursing care to individuals within a correctional facility. The successful candidate must possess a valid Illinois License, demonstrate good oral and written communication skills, be a self-starter, and be capable of carrying out nursing duties under the direction of medical personnel in a correctional setting.

Requirements

  • Requires Illinois license as a Practical nurse.
  • Requires one (1) year of practical nursing experience.
  • Must pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Must pass a drug screen.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefers at least one (1) year of nursing experience in a correctional setting.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working in mental health.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience problem solving in a nursing position.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working on an interdisciplinary team.
  • Prefers at least one (1) year of working experience in a leadership role.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all nursing duties within the licensee’s scope of the Illinois Nurse Practice Act, including preparing and administering medications, performing nursing interventions as delegated, seeking instruction from a registered professional nurse for new or unfamiliar nursing activities, and reporting unsafe, unethical, or illegal healthcare practices or conditions.
  • Makes rounds to monitor and report on patients’ progress and examines, recognizes, and interprets symptoms of patients.
  • Orders medical and other supplies.
  • Participates in completing orientation and in-service training of employees.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
