About The Position

This is a Licensed Practical Nurse 2 On-Call position at the Washington Veterans Home in Port Orchard, Washington. The role involves providing resident-centered care to Veterans, ensuring a safe and healthy environment, and treating them with dignity and respect. The position requires assisting and monitoring residents with activities of daily living based on current nursing standards of practice and with a heart for the mission of Serving Those Who Served. The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) is a national leader in advocating for Veterans and their families, connecting them to earned benefits and innovative programs for their health and wellness. They also provide critical community services through various programs and operate four State Veterans Homes that offer Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care.

Requirements

Current Washington state practical nurse license or unencumbered practical nurse multistate license.
Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the English language and be able to read, write and speak English.
Ability to perform data entry.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to provide a positive living environment for residents relating to meeting psychosocial needs.
Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
Ability to document and report observed changes in patient condition and behavior.

Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check every two (2) years.
Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening.
Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards.
Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. and be capable of reaching a minimum of 36" using proper technique to stock shelves and access supplies.
Employee must also be able to push or pull with sufficient strength and walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner during the entire workday.
Must maintain a valid practical nursing license and provide from the State of Washington Department of Health.
Must maintain regular and reliable attendance and be willing to work as needed.
Must successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in-service, and other required training.
Must become familiar and comply with all DVA policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
Must sign the confidentiality statement for all employees.
Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.
Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.

Nice To Haves

Washington state practical nurse license preferred.
Long-term care experience and/or one (1) year of experience as a practical nurse.
Understanding of accurate methods and practices of nursing and restorative care, personal hygiene and sanitation methods, recordkeeping, report preparation, infection control procedures, and client rights.
Experience in assessing, evaluating, and participating in the development of appropriate plans of care.

Responsibilities

Prepare, carry out, evaluate, and revise treatment plans for individual residents based on personal observations and recommendations of physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and/or other nurses.
Pass medications and administer, monitor, and record treatments.
Assess resident condition (including skin assessment).
Promote resident participation in recreational activities.
Suction patients, administer oxygen, catheterization, irrigation.
Administer IV solutions, colostomy and trach care.
Maintain gastric feeding tubes and pumps.
Process physician orders.
Assist with routine rehabilitative and maintenance.
