About The Position

Under indirect supervision, this individual provides a range of substance abuse counseling services to individuals, groups, and/or families as appropriate to the specific expectations of the position. This individual will work in an environment requiring a moderate level of independence. This individual will lead and train other providers/counselors.

Requirements

  • Must be either licensed by the state of Minnesota, have a temporary permit to practice, or be exempt from licensure under Minnesota Statues Chapter 148F.
  • Must document competence in screening for and working with mental health problems through a 12-hour education program and experience.
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified or obtain it before direct patient contact.
  • Must pass background studies issued by the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
  • Individuals exempt from MN Statues chapter 148F must complete a Baccalaureate degree with a major in Social Work, Nursing, Sociology, Human Services, or Psychology; or must be a registered nurse.
  • Individuals exempt from MN Statues chapter 148F must complete a minimum of 120 hours of classroom instruction in which each of the core functions as listed in 148f are covered.
  • Individuals exempt from MN Statues chapter 148F must have completed 440 hours of supervised experience as an alcohol and drug counselor, either as a student or staff member.
  • Individuals with a temporary permit from the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy may provide chemical dependency treatment service if they meet either of the requirements below: The individual with a temporary permit must be supervised by a licensed alcohol and drug counselor assigned by the license holder. The supervising licensed alcohol and drug counselor must document the amount and type of supervision provided at least on weekly basis. The supervision must relate to the clinical practice.
  • The individual with a temporary permit must be supervised by a Clinical Supervisor approved by the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy.

Responsibilities

  • Provide substance abuse counseling services as defined in the 12 Core Functions as stated in Minnesota Statutes Chapter 148F: screening; intake; orientation; assessments; treatment planning; counseling (group, individual and family); case management; crisis intervention; patient education; referral; reports; record keeping; and consultation with other professionals regarding patient treatment and services.
  • Follow and support CADT’s philosophy, policies, procedures, and job responsibilities.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with referral sources and community agencies.
  • Diagnose substance abuse disorders.
  • Meet with families to identify needs for services and to make appropriate referrals upon requests.
  • Participate in meetings – team staffing, staff meeting, and consultations.
  • Maintain open communication with management team, staff, and patients.
  • Maintain records according to CADT policy and procedures, and licensing regulations.
  • Work as an active and effective member of the treatment team.
  • Demonstrate interest and willingness to increase skills and knowledge regarding substance abuse and participate in activities that advance the field of substance abuse treatment.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor within the agency and the community.
  • May participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance treatment skills.
  • May assist in the training of paraprofessionals in the performance of job duties.
  • Perform other duties.
