About The Position

Under the direction of the Principal, the Library Specialist provides a well-organized, smoothly functioning library environment in which teachers and students can take full advantage of available resources. This role involves presenting library awareness programs, managing library materials, assisting students and teachers, and maintaining the library's operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • Verified completion of 60 college credit hours or passing score on ParaPro assessment.
  • Two years previous experience in library management.
  • Demonstrated compassion and understanding for children.
  • Ability to work and effectively with students, staff members and parents.
  • Attach a copy of college transcripts to the application.
  • Knowledge of office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proper English, grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation.
  • Use of computers and technology, to include, but not limited to email, internet, Microsoft Office or equivalent software.

  • School library experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Presents library awareness programs and lessons on literature and library filing system.
  • Reads to small groups or classes of students.
  • Types and processes orders, reports, bibliographies, forms, library schedules, letters to publishers, catalog cards and the like.
  • Selects, orders and receives books.
  • Maintains files of catalog cards, vertical file material, publishers' catalogs and the like.
  • Writes notices to homeroom teachers and parents concerning overdue books and collects fines for such books.
  • Makes simple repairs on damaged books and processes more severely damaged books for repair.
  • Prepares current magazines for shelving and maintains the back-number stacks.
  • Performs the annual inventory of library materials and the preparation of lists of missing books and books to be discarded.
  • Shelves incoming books.
  • Maintains current inventory of supplies and AV equipment.
  • Orders items for acquisition as needed and performs minor repair on machines.
  • Oversees the general neatness and attractiveness of the library and its displays.
  • Helps students locate reference materials and other instructional materials.
  • Assists teachers in selecting reading material related to curriculum.
  • Performs other related duties as required by supervisor.
