About The Position

Under general supervision, this individual is responsible for a variety of public service duties in various phases of library operations. This position may include the exercising of judgment and discretion in performing library routines with technical advice available when needed and the determining of methods necessary to accomplish duties and objectives. This individual may exercise oversight of staff in lower classifications and is responsible for interpreting policies and providing public service. This job requires knowledge of library principles, practices and procedures. This individual performs related and other work as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma OR 60 semester hours of successful college coursework OR two years of paid customer service work experience involving frequent contacts with the public.
  • Knowledge of current technology.
  • Ability to learn and use integrated library systems, services, and resources and assist patrons with using library services and resources.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, library policies and procedures.
  • Ability to plan and present programs to targeted audience.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with patrons and staff.
  • Ability to create and maintain pleasant impressions of the library.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, twist, talk, hear, and use hands to reach for, finger, grasp, handle, feel and/or operate objects, tools, or controls.
  • Hand-eye coordination to operate computers and office equipment.
  • Specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to occasionally to frequently climb, balance, stoop, crouch, squat, kneel, and crawl.
  • Ability to occasionally to frequently lift and/or carry up to twenty pounds, frequently to constantly lift and/or carry up to ten pounds.
  • Ability to frequently to constantly push and/or pull loaded book carts and/or boxes of materials weighing up to seventy-five pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as Night & Saturday Team Lead, coordinating, directing, and overseeing all the work of a branch or department in the absence of the Branch Manager, Assistant Manager, or Department Head.
  • Assists with training and overseeing employees, maintaining effective working relationships, and scheduling substitutes.
  • Performs reference, readers’ advisory, youth services, circulation, outreach, and special collection duties.
  • Assists patrons in the selection of materials and the use of library equipment, services, and collections.
  • Answers routine questions, takes interlibrary loan requests, and assists patrons with databases, digital resources, and Internet usage.
  • Conducts computer classes and plans/provides programming to various target audiences.
  • Conducts and attends community outreach programs and system-wide outreach activities.
  • Promotes library services and fosters positive relationships with community organizations and schools.
  • Answers telephone, charges/discharges/renews library materials, registers new borrowers, and updates records.
  • Pulls and processes request materials, empties book drop, assists with filing & sorting, shelves and straightens library materials, and reads shelves for proper order.
  • Searches for lost library materials, processes incoming materials, and assesses/collects fines for overdue or lost materials.
  • Reads reviews and offers suggestions for material selection and weeds the collection on an ongoing basis.
  • Counts Fines and Miscellaneous Receipts on a rotational basis and prepares money and reports.
  • Assists in the preparation of reports and maintenance of records.
  • Attends staff meetings, meets with supervisor for work review meetings, and attends other meetings as necessary.
  • Travels to other locations for work, meetings, and training.
  • Performs other duties as required.
