Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in school and at least 15 years of age.
  • Ability to work shifts during regular library hours including evenings and weekends.
  • General knowledge of library resources and library operations is acquired through using, volunteering in, or working in a public, school, or special library.
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office, the Internet, and digital resources.
  • Ability to troubleshoot personal computer hardware and software.
  • Communication and customer service skills to interact with people of all ages and backgrounds (in person, phone, email).
  • Ability to read and follow instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly using correct spelling and grammar.
  • Ability to maintain and foster courteous, cooperative relationships with other library staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Time management skills to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
  • To be considered for employment as a student, a person must be: registered as a full-time secondary or post-secondary student in an accredited institution, or currently recognized as having full-time status by the academic institution but applying for a school vacation, practicum or work term, or returning to full-time studies in the next academic term. Students who are in their final year of academic study and who are not intending to return to full-time studies are eligible for student employment up until the time they convocate. Students participating in education and retraining programs at the post- secondary level, though not full-time students, are eligible for related student employment opportunities, where appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Supervisor or designate, performs a variety of tasks related to basic circulation functions and keeping the library collections in order.
  • Shelves materials ensuring accuracy with the Dewey Decimal and other library shelving systems.
  • Circulates and reserves materials (e.g., books, periodicals, audio/visual material) in and out of the library.
  • Registers members and notifies them about reserves and overdue materials.
  • Receives fines and other charges using circulation software.
  • Checks in, receives, cleans, and makes minor repairs to library materials. Notifies supervisor regarding wear and damage.
  • Assists other library staff to prepare displays, programs, and events (e.g., book sales, author visits).
  • Under the supervisor’s direction, assists members to find answers to information requests and materials using print and digital library resources.
  • Requests materials not available in the branch and fills requests from other branches.
  • Assists members and the public with library technology (e.g., library catalogue, e-Books, e-Audiobooks) and assists with basic troubleshooting on devices that use library technologies.
  • Works in a standard library setting or at library headquarters.
  • Range of movement (bending, reaching) is required when shelving materials.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
