About The Position

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for providing a functional and inviting library that supports the school curriculum and recreational reading. This role involves informing teachers, students, staff, and community users about available library resources and learning tools. The specialist will collaborate with classroom educators in instructional design and provide direct research and library skills instruction to students. This is a nine and one-half (9.50) month contract position (195 days) with a benefit package. Precise placement within the salary range will be determined based upon education and experience.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree required.
  • Must have Arkansas Teacher’s License in Library Media.
  • Evidence of current trends in instructional technology.
  • Evidence of skills in classroom management.
  • Experience as a practicing school library media specialist required.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills.
  • Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to quality desegregated education.
  • Ability to work for the duration of the daily contracted time period.
  • Ability to be physically present and at assigned work, with only infrequent unexcused absences, during the contract year.

Responsibilities

  • Provides reading guidance for students and faculty, recognizing their interests and reading levels.
  • Works directly with the Coordinator of Instructional Technology concerning the organization and implementation of the library program.
  • Shares responsibility for ensuring the library functions as an integral part of the school.
  • Serves as a professional consultant to the principal, teachers, and students in relating library materials to the curriculum and for enrichment.
  • Sets up and implements schedules for an effective program for teaching library skills and an effective program of student research in collaboration with teachers, with the approval of the principal.
  • Prepares library bulletins, bibliographies, room collections, and special displays of available books and audiovisual materials for curriculum units.
  • Uses technology in instruction and promotes the use of technology in instruction with teachers.
  • Uses the State Library Frameworks to collaborate with staff in correlating library activities within the curriculum.
  • Attends in-service meetings and participates in organizations that promote professional growth.
  • Organizes, evaluates, and maintains a balanced collection of books and other media reflecting student interests and strengthening the school's instructional program.
  • Orders print and non-print materials for the library, considering requests, curriculum needs, existing collections, and State Department of Education and North Central Association standards.
  • Catalogs and classifies all materials in a uniform manner using professional guidelines.
  • Uses the Spectrum system from Sagebrush Corporation to maintain the student database, public access catalog, and all circulation records.
  • Maintains accurate records and proper statistics for various reports.
  • Conducts an annual inventory of library holdings and presents recommendations for improvement.
  • Instructs faculty and students in the use of instructional technology.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
