About The Position

The Library Media Specialist at Mathewson Elementary School will serve as the heart of the building's Teaching and Learning Commons, a space where all learners, students and adults, can augment their learning through exploration, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. This role involves collaborating with colleagues to create engaging learning experiences that foster student agency, goal setting, and risk-taking in a positive, supportive, and inclusive environment. A key aspect of this position is the implementation and strategic execution of high-quality instruction aligned with the Milford Public Schools Vision of the Learner. The Library Media Teacher will work collaboratively with all learners to cultivate a culture that supports curriculum, individual literacy, and digital citizenship. This includes maintaining a rich collection of print and non-print materials and managing the Learning Commons as a flexible, multi-task environment.

Requirements

Current CT School Library Media Specialist Certification (062) is required.

Responsibilities

Provides active high quality learning experiences and opportunities that cultivate independent learning and meet the diverse needs of students.
Assesses student learning before, during and after lessons; provides actionable feedback; alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
Fosters the development of digital citizenship and models safe and ethical procedures for online behaviors.
Designs initiatives to encourage and engage learners in literacy for understanding and enjoyment.
Engages students in collaborative tasks with members from diverse backgrounds to garner multiple perspectives through the examination of local and global issues and constructing real world solutions.
Develops authentic tasks that are instructionally sound and include key critical thinking, literacy and social skills, as well as instructional technology with appropriate stakeholders.
Engineers instructional experiences prompting learners to explore appropriate resources for inquiry-based research tasks.
Assists learners in devising innovative solutions to a challenge and creating new knowledge.
Imparts strategies to ethically and efficiently use, reuse, remix, or modify other's work in an appropriate and responsible manner.
Connects instruction to discipline-specific content standards, as well as Connecticut Core Literacy Standards, AASL, and ISTE standards.
Provides professional learning of instructional and informational technologies to engage adult learners to enhance curricular implementation across disciplines.
Collaborates with grade level/department meetings, utilizes curriculum maps and implementation guides, and participates in technology and curriculum committees.
Engages in research affecting education, library science, and technology.
Builds collaborative relationships with adult learners that provide support and expand possibilities for the learning community.
Serves as an advocate for the school’s library programs and services and community partnerships by utilizing a variety of communication and technology tools.
Participates in professional growth activities that result in enhanced knowledge of best practices in school library programs and instructional technology.
Promotes the Teaching and Learning Commons as the hub of the school community and an environment where learning is nurtured and all learners can grow and collaborate.
Organizes, operates, and manages the Learning Commons to encourage effective utilization of resources, services, and facilities.
Supervises student users of the Learning Commons, providing equitable access to materials, equipment, and facilities.
Develops and maintains digital and virtual spaces containing various platforms for all materials and Makerspace tools, aligned with district initiatives and in support of established curriculum.
Curates a diverse print and digital collection reflective of the school community, district goals, and initiatives.
Reviews professional literature to assist in purchasing, and vetting of both print and digital resources.
Completes inventories and collection analysis, weeds collection, and catalogues unprocessed materials.
Maintains an efficient system for collection circulation.
Performs operational duties including shelf reading, overdue notices, processing book holds and interlibrary loans, repairing books, and running patron and material reports.
Promotes the integration of technology to expand and improve the management and resources of the Learning Commons.
Develops, recommends, and supports the site media budget.
Prepares reports and recommendations for the administration.
Implements Board of Education and school policies and regulations.
Promotes and upholds goals and objectives for the Board of Education and school.
Performs school related duties as required.
Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Cooperates with colleagues, administrators, and other staff members.
Upholds the ethics of the teaching profession (Connecticut Code of Professional Responsibility for Teachers).
Performs other tasks and responsibilities as delegated by the principal and/or superintendent or designee.
