About The Position

Stark Library is seeking a part-time Library Clerk at its DeHoff Memorial Branch, the heart of a tight-knit Canton community. Located at 216 Hartford Ave SE, near STEAMM Academy at Hartford, this role plays a vital part in delivering friendly, face-to-face service to patrons. In this 24-hour-per-week position, including a Friday/Saturday rotation, you will assist with circulation, basic technology support, and general library services while helping ensure smooth daily operations at the service desk. This opportunity is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people of all experience levels, is comfortable with computers and office equipment, and is passionate about creating a welcoming environment that supports access to information. Position Summary An employee serving in this position advances the mission of the Library by providing direct public service. This role is responsible for performing intermediate to advanced level clerical work related to customer assistance and services, circulation, and the collections as well as providing support to other Library staff as needed. An employee in this position may also assist with the training of staff members, in particular Substitutes and Library Clerks. Requirements

  • Ability to perform most clerical functions independently and without assistance.
  • Intermediate to advanced familiarity with library services and operations.
  • Ability to perform intermediate to advanced functions using the library circulation system, service platforms and following current procedures.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of collection platforms.
  • Ability to learn and obtain certification in passport processing.
  • Demonstrates intermediate to advanced level literacy with respect to standard computer and office software.
  • Ability to sort and file alphabetically and numerically.
  • Ability to make simple arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to assist with the training of other staff in responsibilities of Library Clerk and Substitute.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Years of relevant experience: 2 or more years is required.
  • Experience with the principles and practices of customer service is required.
  • Experience with library circulation systems and procedures is required.
  • Experience in public library or public-sector organizations is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working as a Library Clerk is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Is typically the initial point of contact for most patrons/customers and spends majority of time providing customer assistance “on the floor”.
  • Proactively promotes library services and offerings to patrons.
  • Assists patrons with and demonstrates all library service and collection platforms, and is an experienced user of platforms.
  • Performs advanced searches through both public and ILS interfaces.
  • Assists patrons with basic informational questions using common internet search techniques or prepared reference resources.
  • Is aware of and can direct patrons to print and online reference tools, including Reader’s Advisory resources.
  • Assists patrons in accessing and using document machines, library computers and library-supported software, and troubleshoots intermediate to advanced technical problems.
  • Performs transactional services (e.g., notary, passport) that have defined rules, limited or specific answers, and/or detailed process guidelines.
  • Performs all direct patron and material circulation functions.
  • Uses in-depth understanding of ILS Circulation Module to assist patrons and troubleshoot ILS issues.
  • May have responsibility for regularly implementing record maintenance tasks.
  • Assists other staff with internal and external group program set up.
  • Introduces patrons to internal, passive programs and related materials.
  • May assist other staff with preparing materials for programs.
  • Assists other staff in external promotional activities.
  • May assist in shelving as needed.
  • Assists in merchandising materials.
  • Pulls materials from a list to assist with collection management or circulation tasks.
  • May assist with training of staff members, in particular Substitutes and Library Clerks.
  • Serves on library committees as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.
