About The Position

This role serves as the first point of contact for patrons, providing assistance with library materials, information, technology, and programming. The Library Associate plays a key role in circulation, collection maintenance, and supporting library operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • One year of similar or related experience
  • Early Literacy knowledge and Storytime program development
  • Knowledge of public library reference service
  • Knowledge of print and online reference resources
  • Skill in reference interviewing
  • Skill in using and troubleshooting a variety of computers and mobile electronic devices
  • Skill in Windows, MS Office Suite, and Publisher
  • Skill in using Innovative Interfaces, Inc’s Sierra or another comparable automated library system
  • Skill in customer services including dealing with difficult patrons and volatile situations
  • Able to operate various office equipment including copiers
  • Able to plan and conduct age-appropriate programming
  • Able to use good judgment
  • Able to work in teams
  • Able to work with confidential information
  • Able to foster a nonjudgmental, supportive environment for a diverse population of users by using patience and effective communication to assure a positive learning experience
  • Able to push a fully loaded book-cart weighing up to 200 lbs.
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first point of contact for patrons needing assistance with library materials and information, guiding them in searching the catalog and stacks, accessing databases, and navigating the Internet.
  • Pass patrons to a Librarian for assistance beyond the scope of a reference interview.
  • Check out and renew materials, assist patrons with self-checkout and checking in materials, issue and update library cards, and process holds.
  • Collect money for fines and over-dues, and check in materials, sorting and routing them to their proper location.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for patrons needing assistance with library technology, identifying opportunities for formal training, and advising patrons on available instruction.
  • Develop and assist in delivering informative and entertaining programs, often under the guidance of a Librarian, using project management and outcomes-based planning and evaluation tools.
  • Assist Community Relations and Marketing with recruiting attendees for programs to promote library resources and represent the library district.
  • Inform Librarians about gaps in the collection to maintain an appealing, current, and useful collection.
  • Assist with providing website content, shelving library materials, creating booklists, displays, bulletin boards, and electronic documents.
  • Assist Supervisor to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
