About The Position

The Pratt Library has an opening for a Library Associate II for the Fiction and Humanities Department in our Central branch. Under the supervision of the Department Manager and in conjunction with the larger Central Library/State Library Resource Center team, this position will provide reference and other library services to internal and external customers from Baltimore and around the state. They will also support departmental and system-wide projects and may lead customer-facing programs. Excellent public service is a critical component of this position. This position will require work in the evenings and on the weekends.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in English or a humanities related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience in an educational, bookstore, or library environment.
  • Successful completion of the Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) within two years of hire.
  • Experience working with urban populations.
  • Moderate digital literacy including Cloud-based office platforms such as O365 or G Suite (document, slide show, and spreadsheet applications)
  • Effective email communication.
  • Effective utilization of shared documents.
  • Effective use of web-based meeting software.
  • Ability to distinguish between credible and non-credible web sources.
  • Ability to fill out electronic forms.
  • Ability and willingness to learn how to use other library specific software and platforms effectively.
  • Ability to instruct members of the public on related tools.
  • Knowledge of library resources and functions.
  • Ability to engage with diverse urban populations in a positive and engaging way.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse age levels, educational, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in ethnically diverse communities.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and skills as the library and world in general evolve.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a public-facing role.

Responsibilities

  • Provides excellent reference services in person and remotely (phone, email, web conference) for patrons of all ages.
  • Researches current and historic materials in the subject areas covered in the department to provide the best reader’s advisory, recommends local resources to meet patron needs, assists in suggesting new resources and titles for acquisition, mentors patrons in the use of media.
  • Answers basic reference questions in person and remotely in the department as well as at the Central Hall service desk and in other departments as needed.
  • Locates materials for patrons.
  • Provides technology assistance to customers who are using the library’s computers or other library technology.
  • Performs basic collection management (shelf reading, weeding, etc.) as needed in the department.
  • Assists in planning and executing public programs in the department.
  • Creates and refills displays of new and interesting materials.
  • Develop and lead workshops, demonstrations, and training sessions for patrons of all ages and skill levels.
  • Maintains an organized and safe public working environment, ensuring all equipment is in working order and supplies are stocked.
  • Develop instructional materials, guides and tutorials to support patrons in learning new technologies.
  • Ensures compliance with library policies and safety procedures, including assisting patrons in following proper usage guidelines.
  • Works in concert with the Department manager, the department, the library administrative staff and the Chief of the State Library Resource Center.
