About The Position

The Enoch Pratt Free Library has an opening for a Library Associate II in the Earl Teen Center and the Adult Workshop Maker Space areas for the Pratt Library/State Library Resource Center (SLRC) Division. The Library Associate works in our creative Maker areas providing engaging programs and library services to meet the needs of Maryland Libraries and Baltimore City families and students. This position works with large groups and introduces new technologies. This position has the opportunity to serve on library committees, attend professional meetings, conferences, and workshops. The Library Associate works under the supervision of the Earl Teen Center Department Manager, and in partnership with the Best & Next Department. This position works on-site and requires a flexible work schedule including evenings and Saturdays.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Fine Arts, or a STEM related field.
  • Two years of experience in an education, arts, museum, or library environment.
  • Experience working directly with teen in education, arts, theater, library, or a related environment.
  • Successful completion of the Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) during within two years of hire.
  • Knowledge of library resources and functions.
  • Knowledge of the preparation of material for oral presentation.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply research techniques and methods.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons, library staff and the community, including teachers, principals and recreation center staff.
  • Work effectively with people of diverse age levels, educational, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in ethnically diverse communities.
  • Experience in makerspace environments, STEAM education, digital fabrication, or a related field.
  • Proficiency with at least three of the following: 3D printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, electronics, sewing, bookbinding, papermaking, printmaking, VR headsets, game design, audio production, and DMX lighting controllers.
  • Comfortable teaching and engaging with diverse groups, including children, teens, and adults.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Learn and develop new technologies and skills as the makerspace evolves.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a public-facing role.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage a schedule and coordinate promotional efforts.
  • Proficiency with the use of the Google & Microsoft Suite of programs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Tinkercad, Fusion 360, Inkscape, Cura, Adobe Creative Suite, Unity, Unreal Engine, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, or related digital tools.
  • Experience with traditional and digital printmaking techniques.
  • Experience developing and facilitating workshops or educational programs.
  • Experience with three or more of the following: 3D printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, electronics, sewing, bookbinding, papermaking, printmaking, VR headsets, game design, audio production, and DMX lighting controllers.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, French, Korean, or other foreign languages.
  • Multicultural experience.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and leads programs for a diverse community, family workshops, afterschool programs, and STEAM activities.
  • Maintains considerable knowledge of current trends and research in youth services, identifies and reaches out to local nonprofits and schools for partnering opportunities, assists in planning large festivals and events, performs outreach to local schools and centers.
  • Carries out all programming in a welcoming manner.
  • Works with others in the department to do all aspects of programming including setting up, assisting team members, cleaning after, and collecting evaluations and data.
  • Provides reference services in person and via telephone and email for patrons of all ages.
  • Researches current and classical teen literature to provide the best reader’s advisory, recommends local resources to meet patron needs, assists in suggesting new resources and titles for acquisition, mentors patrons and families in the use of media.
  • Answers basic reference questions in person and over the phone and will be required to cover the reference desk in Central Hall and other departments as needed.
  • Locates materials for patrons.
  • Provides assistance to teens and families using computers.
  • Manages behavior of unattended teens in the department.
  • Plans and leads activities for weekend programs including crafts, maker activities and science experiments.
  • Creates and maintains displays with new and interesting materials
  • Provide hands-on support and guidance to patrons using makerspace equipment, ensuring safe and effective usage.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot, and setup of 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, electronics kits, sewing machines, and printmaking tools.
  • Develops and leads workshops, demonstrations, and training sessions for patrons of all ages and skill levels.
  • Design and implement engaging maker programs, fostering creativity and problem-solving.
  • Maintain an organized and safe makerspace environment, ensuring all equipment is in working order and supplies are stocked.
  • Provide support for VR headsets and game design software, helping patrons explore interactive digital experiences.
  • Offer guidance in audio production, including recording, editing, and mixing using digital audio workstations (DAWs).
  • Track makerspace usage, compiling reports, and providing feedback on program effectiveness.
  • Develop instructional materials, guides, and tutorials to support patrons in learning new technologies.
  • Ensure compliance with library policies and safety procedures, including assisting patrons in following proper usage guidelines.
  • Organize community-driven projects and maker events that encourage participation and skill development.
