About The Position

The Library Assistant provides basic circulation and registration services to ensure patrons have ready access to library materials. This role involves checking materials in and out, issuing library cards, collecting fines, updating patron records, explaining circulation policies, processing patron requests, and assisting patrons with library databases, computer equipment, and software. The position also requires maintaining courteous working relationships with patrons and staff, answering telephone inquiries, and shelving materials. Additionally, the role may involve processing Interlibrary Loan requests and supporting various library programs and activities. Employees at the North-East Branch also perform duties related to the United States Village Post Office, such as selling stamps and accepting priority mail. This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn library operations, services and policies, including computer procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize daily work routines for location effectively.
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills with a willingness to learn and keep current with emerging technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Uses decision making skills to reflect values-based principles.
  • Must be able to access materials from shelves which may be overhead or those which may be below waist level.
  • Must be able to work at a counter used for customer interactions.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to speak and understand English.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.

Nice To Haves

  • Customer Service experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, American Sign Language, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.

Responsibilities

  • Lift, route, and shelve materials, which may weigh up to 35 pounds.
  • Process patrons' request material.
  • Prepare and send Interlibrary Loan requests.
  • Perform other related work and as assigned, such as Kid’s café, teen lock-ins, notary services and supporting programs or activities.
  • Sell stamps and accept priority flat rate boxes and envelopes at the North-East Branch.
