About The Position

Kitsap Regional Library is seeking an enthusiastic individual for a 20-hour per week Library Assistant position at the Bainbridge Island branch. This role focuses on providing excellent external and internal customer service. The team is described as positive, highly motivated, and passionate about helping people. The position involves a wide range of circulation and customer service functions, including staffing the circulation desk, checking library materials in and out, issuing library cards, assessing or adjusting fines, managing patron accounts, preparing financial reports, and providing direct assistance to patrons. The Library Assistant reports to the Public Services Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of experience in a customer service environment
  • Ability to sort and file alphanumerically
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations
  • Ability to navigate the Dewey Decimal System
  • Ability to demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills with a diverse audience
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, volunteer groups and to serve the public courteously
  • Ability to perform financial procedures using the ILS system
  • Ability to access and utilize staff Intranet resources
  • Ability to follow detailed written or verbal procedural instructions accurately, with willingness to seek clarification
  • Ability to acquire and effectively implement knowledge of library policies and procedures and to use independent judgment to resolve circulation and patron problems within established guidelines
  • Ability to work a schedule that may change periodically, including evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work collaboratively to create and maintain an inclusive environment where staff and patrons are respected and feel safe, supported and valued

Responsibilities

  • Staffing the circulation desk
  • Checking in and out various library materials
  • Issuing library cards
  • Assessing or adjusting fines
  • Administering patron accounts
  • Preparing financial reports
  • Providing direct assistance to patrons
  • Processing periodicals
  • Processing shipment and book drops
  • Assisting patrons with self-checkout machines
  • Answering questions in the hold areas
  • Assisting patrons with basic reference questions and referring patrons to other qualified staff
  • Supporting the branch team
  • Responding to patron complaints or concerns within established guidelines
  • Assisting patrons using public computers, printers, and copier/fax machines
  • Elevating technical service issues via work orders
  • Promoting library programs, information, services, and materials
  • Assisting with periodicals processing
  • Designing displays and other library promotional and informational materials
  • Supporting the library opening and closing processes
  • Attending branch meetings, workshops, and systemwide training sessions
  • Assisting with collection maintenance (under supervision), including weeding, light mending, and updating labels
  • Following library policies, procedures and guidelines in the event of facility or patron related incidents
  • Referring to offsite management staff to resolve problems, concerns, or conflicts
  • Assisting with training and programming (on occasion)
  • Maintaining a clean, welcoming, and safe library environment
  • Supporting volunteers as needed
  • Performing other related duties as assigned
