About The Position

Performs paraprofessional library work under regular supervision. Assists patrons with various library inquiries, performs a wide range of circulation duties, and supports the planning and implementation of library programs and services.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of basic library procedures, methods, and techniques.
  • General knowledge of library circulation functions.
  • General knowledge of office procedures and records maintenance techniques.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and other electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets.
  • Skill in the use of library equipment, materials, and resources.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment.
  • Ability to establish and effective working relationships with the City of Bartow staff, library staff members, volunteers, and others in the library field at the local, regional, and state levels.
  • Ability to supervise employees and volunteers in a fair manner.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to interact with library users courteously, professionally, and efficiently.

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associates preferred; 1 to 5 years of experience in library work, customer service, or other work dealing with the public; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience which provides the necessary intermediate knowledge, skills, and abilities and other competencies necessary for the position.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, reaching, and stooping.
  • Ability to exert up to twenty (20) pounds of force regularly.
  • Required to use written and oral communication skills.
  • Read and interpret data, information, and documents.

Responsibilities

  • Assists patrons with various library inquiries; helps patrons find information and materials; provides reader’s advisory assistance.
  • Registers patrons for library cards; checks materials in and out; monitors, inspects, and evaluates materials for wear, damage, or defects.
  • Prepares materials for circulation.
  • Assists library users with electronic devices, library databases and digital resources, general technology questions, and software, including Microsoft office products and Internet browsers.
  • Collects monies for payments of library fees and accurately records transactions.
  • Assists with collection maintenance to include sorting, shelving, and repairing materials.
  • Prepares visually pleasing displays/signage highlighting library materials and programs.
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of various library programs and outreach events.
  • Provide internal and external customer service
  • Provides technical support and guidance to library patrons
  • Provides input on future use of technology and business process improvements
  • Performing analytical type work
  • Coordinating collections
  • Responds to requests for review of collection items
  • Oversees work of subordinate personnel or volunteers as needed.
